SouthernWorldwide.com – Justin Murphy secured victory in New Jersey’s Republican U.S. Senate primary on Tuesday night, positioning him for a general election showdown against Democratic Senator Cory Booker. This contest takes place in a state where the Republican party has not achieved a U.S. Senate victory since 1972.

The primary race was closely contested among the leading three candidates, with approximately 90% of the votes tallied. Following Murphy was suspended New Jersey State Trooper Richard Tabor, and former News 12 New Jersey reporter Alex Zdan. Physician Robert Lebovics trailed in the final position.

Murphy is an attorney and a U.S. Navy veteran hailing from Tabernacle, New Jersey. He previously served as a local committeeman and made an unsuccessful bid for the GOP Senate nomination in 2024, where he finished a distant third. He has launched a new campaign this cycle with the aim of challenging Booker, presenting himself as a conservative, pro-Trump grassroots candidate.

Murphy faces a challenging but nationally significant race against Booker. Booker, a prominent Democratic Senator and a frequent critic of Trump, is running unopposed in the Democratic primary as he seeks another term. He first won the seat in a 2013 special election. While Republicans are aiming to flip this seat, the party’s last U.S. Senate win in the state dates back to 1972.

Murphy, who identifies as self-employed, is also a former deputy mayor of Tabernacle and a U.S. Navy veteran, according to the New Jersey Globe. His previous attempt for the GOP Senate nomination in 2024 saw him finish far behind in third place. He has now launched another campaign this cycle, emphasizing his conservative platform. His key issues include addressing his state’s pollution, opposing the expansion of windmill construction, advocating for parental rights and medical freedom, and improving Medicare for seniors.

“I will convey my Conservative principles with confidence, energy, and optimism. The last time New Jersey elected a Republican to the US Senate was 1972; my campaign represents a new day in New Jersey politics,” Murphy stated on his campaign website. “Being self-employed, I can identify with middle-class voters. I know firsthand financial struggle, debt, and stress. I know the long hours and countless weeks without a paycheck that many small business owners experience as a normal part of their working adult lives. Small business owners will have no better friend in Washington.”

The Republican primary proceeded without a clear favorite endorsed by Trump. Trump does not appear to have officially backed any candidate in New Jersey’s Republican Senate primary. His endorsements prior to Tuesday’s primary were directed towards House Republicans Tom Kean Jr., Jeff Van Drew, and Chris Smith.

Murphy garnered support from two county Republican organizations. He ran in some counties under the slogan “American Conservative Republican,” as indicated by NJ Spotlight News’ 2026 U.S. Senate primary voter guide.

The general election will serve as a crucial test to determine if Republicans can gain traction in New Jersey, a state that has consistently proven difficult for GOP Senate hopefuls.
