SouthernWorldwide.com – Denver Broncos player Jonathon Cooper and his girlfriend were both taken into custody on Friday, facing domestic violence charges.
According to Douglas County jail records, both Cooper and his girlfriend were held on suspicion of two counts of domestic violence and one count of criminal mischief.
Reports from TMZ indicate that an argument between the couple escalated due to allegations of infidelity.
The pair, who have had an on-again, off-again relationship for years, were at Cooper’s residence when the incident began. The arrest affidavit, as reported by TMZ, states that the woman confronted Cooper about his alleged cheating.
She then allegedly grabbed Cooper’s phone and threw it against a wall. Later, she reportedly regained possession of the phone to review its contents.
A physical struggle ensued over the phone, which Cooper eventually retrieved. According to the probable cause affidavit cited by TMZ, Cooper then demanded that the woman leave his home, threatening to break her cell phone if she refused.
When the woman did not leave, the affidavit states that Cooper bit down on the iPhone, causing the screen to break.
A hearing for Cooper took place at 9:45 a.m. in a Douglas County courtroom. A subsequent hearing is scheduled for Monday, where Cooper is expected to enter a plea, as reported by 9NEWS.
Following the initial hearing, Cooper was released on his own recognizance, according to the 9NEWS report.
Cooper, who is 28 years old, joined the Broncos after being drafted by the team in the seventh round out of Ohio State. He has played all five of his NFL seasons with the Denver Broncos.
In the previous season, Cooper played in 17 games, recording 50 tackles and eight sacks. He was a significant contributor to the Broncos’ strong defensive unit. Throughout his career, Cooper has appeared in 81 games, amassing 266 tackles and 31.5 sacks.
The Broncos extended his contract in November 2024 with a four-year deal worth $60 million.
