SouthernWorldwide.com – The NBA often faces criticism for its regular-season games lacking significance, a sentiment understandable when watching on a typical January Wednesday. However, the playoffs consistently deliver excitement, rewarding fans for enduring the less compelling regular season matchups.
This upcoming Game 7 marks the fourth of the playoffs. While three series concluded in sweeps and another three went to six games, this particular matchup signifies a truly competitive basketball contest. The question now becomes how to approach betting this Eastern Conference Game 7.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have faltered. Despite failing to win a single road game throughout the postseason, they surprisingly secured Game 5. It seemed they were poised to clinch the series in six games, especially considering their undefeated home record in the playoffs.
Instead, the Detroit Pistons responded with an aggressive performance, overwhelming the Cavaliers and preventing them from establishing any rhythm. The Cavaliers suffered a disheartening loss and now face the challenge of winning on the road.
The stakes in this game extend beyond just the Cavaliers’ fate. The legacy of James Harden, and to a lesser extent, Donovan Mitchell, is also on the line.
Donovan Mitchell is undoubtedly a very good player, but he is not yet considered among the all-time greats. James Harden, however, is. Unfortunately for Harden, he has historically struggled in Game 7s. His averages in these high-pressure games stand at 19.1 points, 7.3 assists, and 5.8 rebounds. While not poor statistics on the surface, his shooting percentages in these games are a concerning 35.3% from the field and 22.2% from three-point range. Although he has a 4-4 record in Game 7s, his performance in his last three such games has been particularly subdued, with a combined total of only 34 points over 113 minutes of play.
The Detroit Pistons seem to thrive when facing adversity, a characteristic that aligns with their gritty team identity.
Cade Cunningham continues to be a driving force for the Pistons, and he finally received significant support in Game 6 from Jalen Duren. This series was always going to be a demanding one for Duren, and it appears he is taking a longer path to maturity compared to some of his peers. While he has shown improvement this year, the consistency required from him is not yet fully realized.
As the series returns home, the Pistons will need Duren to dominate the boards. If he can keep the Pistons competitive in the rebounding battle, they are well-positioned to win this game. They secured Game 6 by a narrow margin of just three rebounds, but controlling the glass would neutralize a significant advantage for the Cavaliers’ Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley. However, it’s worth noting that the Pistons also won the rebounding battle in both of their losses in Cleveland.
I do not anticipate this game being a blowout for the Pistons. Mitchell and Cunningham are likely to match each other point for point. Harden needs to elevate his game and establish himself as the third-best player on the court, a role he has yet to convincingly fulfill in this postseason.
This marks the second Game 7 for both franchises in the playoffs, meaning neither team will be caught off guard by the intensity and pressure of such a decisive game.
Objectively speaking, the Cavaliers possess the more talented roster. However, the Pistons have displayed a more impressive overall performance this season, and particularly in the playoffs. Both teams have shown vulnerabilities and moments of inconsistency. The Cavaliers, as a veteran team, should ideally be more resilient.
Nevertheless, Cleveland must win this game. The franchise’s aspirations and the legacies of its key players are too significant for them not to be adequately prepared. While this might seem like a simplistic analysis, I am leaning towards the Cavaliers with the points, and I believe they will win the game outright. I am anticipating a standout performance from Mitchell, and Harden should contribute at least 10 assists.
Regardless of the outcome, the winner of this game is projected to be defeated by the New York Knicks.
