SouthernWorldwide.com – The FA Cup final, in its storied 155-year history, has seldom witnessed a winning goal as audacious as the one that decided this year’s showpiece event.
Manchester City emerged victorious over Chelsea with a 1-0 triumph at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, a result sealed by a moment of sheer brilliance from Antoine Semenyo.
The forward injected life into a final that had been starved of significant chances and excitement, delivering a spectacular back-heeled goal in the second half.
Receiving a cross from Erling Haaland in the 72nd minute, Semenyo instinctively flicked his heel at the ball, directing it with precision into the far corner, leaving Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez with no chance.
“It has happened a couple of times in training, it happened perfectly today. … It came straight to me and I had to improvise myself as quickly as I can,” Semenyo shared with the BBC. “It is a good finish, I can’t lie.”
Chelsea’s interim coach, Calum McFarlane, concurred with the assessment of the goal’s quality.
“For me it’s a one in 100 goal,” he stated. “For me, no, there’s not much more you can do to defend it.”
This victory keeps Manchester City firmly in contention for a domestic treble, having already secured the English League Cup. Pep Guardiola’s squad currently sits second in the Premier League, trailing Arsenal by two points with two rounds remaining.
Looking ahead to a crucial match against Bournemouth on Tuesday, Guardiola indicated that his players would not be permitted “even one beer” to celebrate the FA Cup win.
This marks Guardiola’s 17th major trophy in his decade-long tenure at City, and his 35th career major trophy overall.
With this eighth FA Cup title, Manchester City now stands level with Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur, sharing third place on the all-time winners’ list.
For Chelsea, this defeat means they will conclude the season without any silverware. This comes just a year after being crowned Club World Cup champions and follows a campaign marked by significant turmoil.
Having parted ways with two managers since the beginning of the year, Chelsea entered the final with a relatively inexperienced figure on the touchline in McFarlane, a former youth coach overseeing only his seventh senior team match.
The instability within Chelsea’s management contributed to supporters staging a protest against the club’s American ownership outside the stadium prior to the match.
In that context, McFarlane’s ability to frustrate Guardiola’s formidable side for extended periods was a commendable achievement.
That resilience was ultimately broken by Semenyo’s decisive, match-winning strike.
The Ghana international, who joined City from Bournemouth in January, has made an immediate and significant impact, scoring 10 goals and contributing to two trophy wins for the club.
“As a kid I have always wanted to be playing for the top teams. It took a long time to get there, but I am grateful,” Semenyo expressed. “The first thing he (Guardiola) said to me when I came was, ‘Don’t change your game’ … he still wants me to be me, still create a bit of chaos.”
Following the final whistle, Manchester City supporters erupted in song, chanting the club anthem “Blue Moon” and cheering enthusiastically as Bernardo Silva and John Stones jointly lifted the iconic trophy. Both players are set to depart the club at the end of the season.
“Being able to lift another trophy at Wembley, where we have played so many times, is such a special feeling, one I never take for granted,” Bernardo commented. “To do so as captain makes this one of the best days of my career.”
This triumph for City comes after consecutive losses in the FA Cup final in the preceding two years. This marked their record fourth consecutive appearance in the final, with their last victory in this competition occurring in 2023.
Chelsea has now suffered defeats in their last four FA Cup finals, equalling Leicester City’s record for consecutive losses in the competition.
Arsenal holds the record for most FA Cup titles, having won the competition a record 14 times. Manchester United is second on the all-time list with 13 titles.
Guardiola received congratulations from Prince William as he made his way to collect his winner’s medal. Afterward, the City manager surveyed the celebrating fans filling Wembley.
There has been considerable speculation that this season might be his last at City, although he has yet to officially confirm his future plans.
“The future is bright,” Guardiola stated. “I know the guys, I know how they feel … next year we will be there, we will be better next season.”
