The incident occurred en route to the venue, as Gauff recounted, “We got in a mini car accident on my way to the site today.” She shared this with a touch of humor during her post-match interview with TNT Sports on Tuesday.
The young athlete elaborated on the chaotic commute, describing how the vehicle collided with a pole. “You could feel the impact,” Gauff stated, adding that the mishap also resulted in a spilled drink. “I spilled my juice all over the car.”
Following the accident, the car was no longer operational, necessitating a change in transportation. Gauff and her party had to arrange for a taxi to continue their journey to Roland Garros.
Despite the unexpected detour, Gauff managed to arrive at the iconic clay courts. She then proceeded to secure a comfortable victory in her first-round match against fellow American, Taylor Townsend. The score was a decisive 6-4, 6-0, setting her up for a second-round encounter with Egypt’s Mayar Sherif.
Adding to the day’s eventful nature, Gauff’s match began earlier than anticipated due to a retirement in a preceding match on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Just moments before stepping onto the court, Gauff faced another minor wardrobe malfunction. “And then right before I went onto court, my dress got stuck, so my physio was in the bathroom trying to help me take it off,” she explained.
Reflecting on the series of events, Gauff commented, “It was an eventful day.” She found a silver lining in the unusual circumstances, suggesting that such distractions can help take one’s mind off the pressure of the match. “But I feel like whenever that happens, it lets you not think about the match too much,” she added.
The 20-year-old expressed gratitude for having safely reached the tournament despite the earlier incident. “I’m just happy to be here in one piece,” Gauff concluded.
