SouthernWorldwide.com – In the upcoming November general election, Democrat Rebecca Bennett is set to challenge incumbent Republican Representative Tom Kean Jr. of New Jersey. Kean has been notably absent from public view for several months due to an undisclosed health issue, a situation that has drawn significant attention.

Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, emerged victorious in a competitive Democratic primary for a crucial swing district seat in the New Jersey House of Representatives, as reported by The Associated Press. Her win positions her for what is anticipated to be her most challenging re-election bid to date.

Meanwhile, Tom Kean Jr., a two-term congressman, ran unopposed in the Republican primary. He has not been seen publicly since early March, a prolonged absence that has raised questions and put pressure on House Republicans, who hold a slim majority.

The district Bennett is contesting is considered vital for House Republicans in their efforts to maintain their narrow control. Governor Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey, a Democrat, narrowly won this northern New Jersey swing seat during her gubernatorial race in 2025, indicating its competitive nature. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report has classified the upcoming contest as a “toss-up.”

This developing general election battle unfolds as Kean faces increasing scrutiny over his extended absence from Congress. Even House GOP leadership has expressed a lack of detailed information regarding his condition.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, stated in May that Kean was dealing with a medical issue and intended to be fully transparent about it. Johnson, however, admitted he did not know the specifics, emphasizing his respect for Kean’s privacy.

Shortly before polls closed on Tuesday, Kean released a written statement. He reiterated his commitment to being “completely transparent” about his medical situation once he resumes in-person work, which he expects to do “within a matter of weeks.”

“I understand the need for transparency on this matter, and I look forward to sharing my experience with the public,” Kean stated, without providing further details about his health condition.

This commitment echoes a previous statement made in mid-May, where Kean indicated to the New Jersey Globe that he anticipated returning to work “in the next couple of weeks.”

According to GovTrack, a website that tracks congressional attendance, Kean has missed all 104 of the most recent roll call votes. His last recorded vote was on March 5.

Despite his physical absence from Capitol Hill, Kean’s office has maintained an active presence on social media, and he has even introduced legislation during his period away. His re-election campaign has also received a boost from President Donald Trump, who posted on social media to highlight his endorsement of Kean, asserting that the incumbent “WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN.”

In the Democratic primary, Bennett faced competition from two former Biden administration officials, Tina Shah and Michael Roth. Businessman Brian Varela, running on a progressive platform, also vied for the nomination.

Bennett, a first-time candidate, ran a campaign that was comparatively less progressive than her primary opponents. Notably, she was the only Democrat in the race who did not call for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Kean previously secured a victory over Democratic challenger Sue Altman in 2024 by a margin of approximately 5 percentage points. He is the son of former two-term New Jersey Governor Tom Kean, who served as the state’s chief executive for a significant portion of the 1980s.

Following Bennett’s primary win, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), the campaign arm for House Republicans, was quick to criticize her. Maureen O’Toole, a spokeswoman for the NRCC, issued a statement on Tuesday, labeling Bennett as a “tax-and-spend liberal” who aligns with the “socialist Squad” and aims to increase expenses for New Jersey residents.
