SouthernWorldwide.com – Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, has voiced his profound sympathy for Erika Kirk, who experienced the harrowing event of a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner less than a year after her husband’s tragic murder.

Fetterman acknowledged the immense emotional toll such an event would have on Kirk, stating, “How triggering that must have been for her.”

He described his interaction with Kirk, noting, “I expressed how sorry I am. She was frantic, understandably, after her husband was assassinated.”

The senator also expressed his dismay and frustration regarding the online backlash directed at Kirk. This criticism emerged after a video circulated showing her in tears, pleading to go home following the incident.

“It blows,” Fetterman stated emphatically. “People attack a widow. I mean, what’s wrong with people? That’s bonkers.”

Kirk’s husband was assassinated in September while participating in one of his well-known college outreach events at Utah Valley University.

Senator Fetterman is often recognized for his willingness to bridge partisan divides, being one of the few Democrats to vote with Republicans on certain issues, including his strong support for Israel.

Beyond addressing the emotional distress caused by the recent shooting, Fetterman also shared his perspective on the escalating tensions with Iran. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing U.S. foreign policy and defense strategies to counter nuclear threats.

When questioned about former President Donald Trump’s proposal for gas tax relief, Fetterman steered the conversation towards the necessity of maintaining pressure on Iran to disarm and abandon its nuclear ambitions.

“I think it’s important to stand and demand Iran to surrender its nuclear material,” he asserted. “I mean, my views haven’t changed.”

Fetterman has previously criticized members of his own party who have voiced opposition to Trump’s efforts to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program. He argued that such opposition might embolden Iran by suggesting Trump could be swayed by political pressure to withdraw his efforts.

Significantly, Fetterman was the sole Democrat to vote against a Senate war powers resolution aimed at limiting American involvement in the conflict with Iran on Wednesday, marking his seventh such vote.

Furthermore, he suggested that China should adopt a more proactive stance in pressuring Iran and share in the economic repercussions of Iran’s actions.

“I think China should feel that pain,” Fetterman declared. “I think that’s entirely appropriate. Why can’t China demand that?”

“Why not? Unless they want to create Iran as a nuclear power, and that would be incredibly dangerous for the whole world peace.”

Amidst growing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program, China has faced scrutiny from U.S. officials concerning its economic connections with Iran. These concerns include allegations that Chinese entities have assisted Tehran in circumventing sanctions and have supported its military infrastructure.

Fetterman also indicated his support for the proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget for fiscal year 2027, a request that marks the largest ever submitted by an administration.

“I’m very open to this,” he commented. “The idea that we are the arsenal of the free world.”
