SouthernWorldwide.com – House Democrats convened a virtual call on Wednesday to address the escalating national redistricting controversy, which could significantly impact the upcoming midterm elections.
The call was hosted by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and featured former Attorney General Eric Holder, who also chairs the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC).
Notable attendees included House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene. A source close to the discussions indicated that Holder provided a comprehensive overview to the House Democratic Caucus.
The briefing focused on the ongoing efforts to challenge what was described as “Donald Trump’s gerrymandering scheme” in Texas and across the nation. Following the call, another source stated that the entire Democratic caucus is unified in their opposition to Republican redistricting strategies.
Texas has emerged as a central point in the redistricting debate. This intensified after Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott convened a special legislative session last month.
The purpose of this session was to consider a new congressional map that would have resulted in a five-seat Republican advantage. The Texas Senate approved this map on Tuesday with a 19-2 vote.
Many Democratic lawmakers walked out of the Senate proceedings in protest. Meanwhile, Texas House Democrats had previously fled the state to prevent Republicans from achieving a quorum in their chamber.
Governor Abbott has stated his intention to call another special session if the House Democrats do not return before the legislative session concludes at the end of the week.
Texas House Democratic Caucus Chairman Gene Wu commented on the situation during a press conference on Wednesday. He described the Republican actions as an attempt to suppress voters who are dissatisfied with the current political climate.

“Republicans know that their agenda and what they have done is so unpopular with not just liberals or Democrats but with all Americans that they need to cheat to rig the system so they can stay in power,” Wu stated.
In response to the developments in Texas, California has indicated its intention to redraw its congressional map if Texas ultimately approves the new districts. California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom wrote to President Trump this week.
He urged the President to intervene and halt further action by Texas and other Republican-led states. Newsom’s office also announced a press conference scheduled for Thursday to reveal a “major announcement.”
The California governor’s office posted a message on X, adopting a style similar to former President Trump’s social media posts. The message declared, “DEMOCRATS WILL DESTROY GREG ABBOTT’S ‘TOTALLY RIGGED MAPS.’ TREMENDOUS WORK IS BEING DONE.”
It further added, “DONALD TRUMP…. GET READY FOR THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PAYBACK YOU’VE EVER SEEN!!!” The NDRC’s nonprofit affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation, is actively involved in a lawsuit challenging Texas’s current congressional maps.
The organization has also been engaged in outreach, including calls and briefings with state and local leaders and partner organizations. Former President Barack Obama is scheduled to headline a fundraiser for the NDRC next week.
The event will also feature Eric Holder and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Holder served as Attorney General during Obama’s presidency. Holder released a statement emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
“In this moment, steps must be taken to respond to the authoritarian measures being considered in certain states and now so brazenly taken in Texas,” Holder said. “We must preserve our democracy now in order to ultimately heal it.”
