SouthernWorldwide.com – In a breathtaking display of skill and precision on the golf course, golfer Haeran Ryu has etched her name in the history books of the LPGA major circuit.

Ryu, a 25-year-old talent from South Korea, achieved a remarkable feat by recording the lowest single round in LPGA major history. She accomplished this with an astonishing 11-under par 60 during the Evian Championship on Saturday.

This historic performance has propelled the South Korean golfer to a commanding three-stroke lead in the tournament. Her exceptional round comes on the heels of her maiden major victory just two weeks prior at the Women’s PGA Championship.

Despite her stellar play, Ryu narrowly missed an eagle on the 18th hole, leaving a 30-foot putt just inches short, which she converted for a birdie instead.

Following her round, Ryu expressed her surprise at the magnitude of her accomplishment, admitting she was unaware of the record until she tallied her scorecard.

“But after the putt, I counted my score with my caddie,” she shared. “Oh my God, it’s 11-under par today. It was so amazing. My caddie says, ‘Yep.’ I’m so happy right now.”

Had Ryu successfully sunk that eagle putt on the final hole, she would have joined an elite club, becoming only the second player in LPGA history to achieve a score of 59.

Her score of 60 surpassed the previous record for the lowest round in an LPGA major by a single shot. This record was previously held by Leona Maguire and Jeungeun Lee6, who both shot 61 at the Evian Championship in 2021, and Hyo Joo Kim, who also recorded a 61 in 2014. The Evian Championship was officially designated as an LPGA major in 2013.

For context, the lowest round recorded in a men’s major championship is 62. This remarkable score is shared among four players: Branden Grace at Royal Birkdale during the 2017 British Open, Xander Schauffele and Rickie Fowler at the 2023 U.S. Open held at Los Angeles Country Club, and Schauffele and Shane Lowry at the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla.

Ryu is hopeful that her historic third-round performance will serve as a significant catalyst, propelling her towards securing a second major championship title within a span of just three weeks.

“That is amazing, amazing dream,” Ryu stated, her voice filled with emotion. “So, I just want that one to come true, but we have one more day.”
