Government landlord joins fraud crackdown as White House widens hunt

This move significantly broadens the White House’s campaign against fraud to include the federal government’s extensive contracting systems.

The General Services Administration (GSA) describes itself as the “engine of government.” It acts as the primary contracting and real estate arm for the federal government, overseeing the essential buildings, services, and goods that government agencies require to function. Through its participation in this task force, the GSA will provide access to its vast procurement data, its expertise in acquisitions, and its ability to coordinate across different agencies. This is a crucial development as the White House intensifies its efforts to detect and eliminate fraud within public programs.

The GSA, through a statement, expressed its pride in joining Vice President Vance and the task force. The White House’s task force is a collaborative effort involving various federal agencies. It was established by President Donald Trump through an executive order with the objective of coordinating strategies to mitigate fraud, waste, and abuse in federal programs. Under the chairmanship of Vice President JD Vance, the task force is focused on several key areas. These include improving the verification of eligibility for programs, strengthening controls over payments, facilitating data sharing among agencies, and assisting law enforcement in disrupting fraudulent schemes.

Historically, the GSA has encountered challenges related to improper payments. For instance, in February, the agency’s Office of Inspector General released a report. This report indicated that federal agencies utilizing GSA pricing on their schedule contracts were at risk of overpaying. The report attributed these risks to failures by government contracting officers or the submission of inaccurate information by contractors.

The White House fraud task force was officially established in March. Since its inception, it has already achieved several early successes. In conjunction with the task force’s efforts, law enforcement agencies apprehended eight individuals in California. These individuals are suspected of defrauding public healthcare services of more than $50 million.

Furthermore, the task force has taken action to withhold $1.4 billion in federal funding. This action was directed at home health and hospice providers who are suspected of engaging in fraudulent activities against the government.

The GSA’s involvement is seen as reinforcing a comprehensive, government-wide strategy. This strategy is dedicated to restoring accountability, bolstering operational integrity, and ensuring that federal programs effectively serve the American people. The administration believes that by merging the task force’s investigative mission with the GSA’s extensive government infrastructure and procurement knowledge, it can accelerate efforts to increase transparency, enhance efficiency, and reinforce public confidence in federal operations.
