SouthernWorldwide.com – Southwest Airlines is celebrating America’s upcoming 250th anniversary with a special patriotic aircraft and a new initiative to encourage volunteerism across the nation.

The airline has unveiled “Independence One,” a uniquely designed airplane adorned with red, white, and blue colors that pay homage to the nation’s founding.

This aircraft features historical American motifs, including the year “1776” in elegant script. It also proudly displays 13 stars, symbolizing the original colonies, and the iconic phrase “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” from the Declaration of Independence, as stated in a press release from the airline.

This new addition joins two other America-themed planes already in Southwest’s fleet. These include “Freedom One,” which was introduced in 2021, and “Liberty One,” another recently unveiled aircraft.

Southwest CEO Bob Jordan expressed that with the new “Independence One” and “Liberty One” aircraft, the airline honors this significant milestone in the nation’s history.

In conjunction with this celebration, Southwest has also announced a partnership with America250, the official organization orchestrating the nationwide commemoration of the country’s semiquincentennial.

As part of this collaboration, Southwest has committed to contributing up to $250,000 through its “We Serve Together” grant program. This program is designed to support nonprofit organizations that are closely linked to the volunteer efforts of Southwest employees.

This financial commitment builds upon the substantial volunteer work already undertaken by Southwest employees. In 2025 alone, employees logged over 180,000 hours of dedicated volunteer service, according to company records.

Rosie Rios, the chair of America250, remarked that as America approaches its 250th anniversary, Southwest Airlines’ enduring legacy of connecting people and communities truly embodies the spirit of freedom and opportunity that defines the nation.

The “Independence One” aircraft entered active service last week. Its inaugural flight departed from Dallas, the airline’s home base, and made its way to Philadelphia, a city deeply intertwined with the nation’s historical beginnings.

Throughout the year, this special aircraft will operate on various routes across the country, serving as a flying symbol of the broader America250 celebration.

The airline, which has been in operation for over five decades, stated that this initiative aligns with its long-standing mission. This mission involves connecting communities throughout the United States while simultaneously honoring the country’s rich history.
