Ketel Marte’s Day Off Strategy Frustrates Diamondbacks as Trade Deadline Nears

SouthernWorldwide.com – Arizona Diamondbacks’ All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte has reportedly caused frustration within the organization as the MLB trade deadline approaches.

Marte, known for his powerful switch-hitting ability, has been a target for trade talks by Arizona in the past, despite his considerable talent and a six-year contract extension that began this season.

However, USA TODAY reported that Marte continues to frustrate parts of the organization by choosing to take days off. Most recently, Marte opted to sit out a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers last week, a game featuring superstar pitcher Shohei Ohtani. He then proceeded to hit a walk-off home run the following day for the D-Backs.

The reason for Marte’s absence from the game last Wednesday was a combination of his personal decision and him dealing with lower back and hamstring issues, according to Arizona Sports. Marte reportedly did not want to risk further injury.

“We’re all human, and we all need a day here and there,” Marte said through a translator after hitting the walk-off homer on Thursday.

This situation is not entirely new for Marte. He had previously caused some tension in the clubhouse due to absences and requests for days off around the All-Star break. Reports indicated that his teammates were not pleased with the timing of his days off, which eventually led to an apology from Marte.

Given Marte’s involvement in past trade rumors, these discussions are expected to intensify with MLB’s trade deadline set for August 3rd this year. Although the deadline is later than usual, teams dealing with injuries and looking to strengthen their rosters will undoubtedly be making calls to the Arizona front office regarding talented players like Marte.

Marte represents a valuable asset who should command a high price if traded, or ideally, be kept by the team. He is under contract through the 2030 season with a relatively team-friendly deal after signing a six-year, $116.5 million contract. He also holds a player option for the 2031 season, when he will be 37 years old.

While his primary position is second base, Marte has also played shortstop and center field throughout his 12-year career. The Dominican Republic native has been selected to three All-Star games, including in each of the last two seasons.

This season, Marte is batting .250 with a .304 on-base percentage and a .450 slugging percentage, resulting in a .754 OPS. This is his lowest OPS mark since his 2022 campaign with Arizona, where he posted a .727 OPS. He has hit 11 home runs, driven in 37 runs, and scored 37 runs in 60 games played.
