SouthernWorldwide.com – Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Democratic challenger Nithya Raman have advanced to a runoff election, following a closely contested primary that has attracted national attention.
This outcome sets the stage for a general election where Bass, the incumbent mayor, will face criticism regarding her performance. Her opponent, Raman, will present a progressive platform emphasizing government-led affordability initiatives.
Voters will make their final decision in the runoff election scheduled for November 3.
Raman, a member of the Los Angeles City Council and the Democratic Socialists of America, has chaired the Housing and Homelessness Committee since 2023. She has been described as a “Mamdani-style socialist,” drawing a comparison to the progressive policies of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Raman believes that the city can do more to address not only its homelessness crisis but also to increase the housing supply, maintain public safety, advance climate goals, and push back against federal immigration enforcement efforts.
“We can bring LA back to what it really is: one of the most creative, beautiful, and hopeful places in the world. But only if we come together to fight for it,” Raman stated in a campaign video.
Throughout the campaign, Raman positioned herself as a hopeful alternative to Bass’s leadership. She also criticized what she termed a “fear-fueled campaign” by Spencer Pratt, an independent candidate with right-leaning tendencies who gained some traction in the final weeks of the race.
“We have a mayor who has failed to lead this city and, on the other hand, a right-wing extremist, powered by MAGA, who’s channeling people’s frustrations about this city into fear and anger and hatred,” Raman commented.
Bass, who assumed office in 2022, asserts that her record demonstrates progress in moving the city in the right direction.
Despite facing scrutiny over issues such as the Palisade fires, a persistent homelessness population, and budget deficits, Bass maintains that she has taken steps to address these challenges during her three years in office.
“Los Angeles is at a turning point. After decades of rising homelessness, under-built housing, and a shrinking police force, it’s Mayor Karen Bass who finally stepped up to change how City Hall works,” a statement on Bass’s website reads.
“Homelessness is down, more housing is being built, and LAPD is hiring new officers.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, endorsed Bass last week.
Bass initially won the mayoral election in 2022 with 54.8% of the vote, defeating independent challenger Rick J. Caruso, who received 45.2%.
