SouthernWorldwide.com – Spencer Pratt, a well-known figure from reality television, is poised to advance in the Los Angeles mayoral election, potentially challenging incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in the November runoff.

Mayor Karen Bass, who has been leading the city since 2022 through a challenging period marked by her response to wildfires, did not secure a majority of the votes in Tuesday’s primary election. This means the top two candidates will proceed to a runoff in November.

This anticipated runoff represents a significant symbolic setback for Bass. She had received endorsements from Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris, and has a long career in California politics, holding various elected Democratic positions.

Pratt, a newcomer to politics and famous for his role in MTV’s “The Hills,” was in second place as of Wednesday morning. This places him on a path to challenge the incumbent.

As election results came in Tuesday evening, Pratt expressed his sentiment to reporters. He stated that “God wanted five more months of me exposing the failures of our mayor.”

Pratt has been a vocal critic of Mayor Bass, consistently focusing on issues that have long troubled Los Angeles. These include the recovery from wildfires, the persistent problem of homelessness on the streets, and rising crime rates. Pratt holds Bass personally accountable for the devastating wildfires that led to the destruction of over 18,000 structures in the city, including his own home in Pacific Palisades.

Pratt’s unexpected surge in popularity appears to have sidelined Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman. Raman, who was once considered a potential challenger to Bass’s re-election bid, had positioned herself to the left of the incumbent. She is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and advocates for a more progressive direction for the city.

As of Wednesday morning, Raman had not yet conceded, despite trailing significantly behind both Bass and Pratt in the vote count.

Pratt, who is a registered Republican, faces a considerable challenge in defeating Bass in the November runoff, should he advance.

The Republican party has a limited presence in the heavily Democratic city, with less than 20% of voters identifying as GOP members. However, the Los Angeles mayoral election is officially nonpartisan.

According to an interview, one observer noted that Pratt is gaining traction among long-time Democratic voters. This is attributed to Mayor Bass’s perceived ineffectiveness. The observer added that Bass’s public statements often reiterate the same approaches to residents who have witnessed deteriorating streets due to crime and mismanagement.

Conversely, Mayor Bass maintains that her leadership is guiding Los Angeles in a positive direction.

“Los Angeles is at a turning point. After decades of rising homelessness, under-built housing and a shrinking police force, it’s Mayor Karen Bass who finally stepped up to change how City Hall works,” states Bass’s official website.

The website also claims that “Homelessness is down, more housing is being built, and the LAPD is hiring new officers.”
