SouthernWorldwide.com – Maine voters are reportedly divided over Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner as a series of scandals continue to shadow his primary campaign.
Interviews with residents outside a Biddeford shopping plaza revealed a spectrum of opinions regarding Platner’s suitability for office, with some expressing significant concerns about his past allegations.
“It’s not a good situation,” shared Jeff from Waterloo, Maine. He voiced his belief that choosing the “lowest common denominator” should not be the path forward for the party.
“I am a conservative, but he’s just got so much baggage that I think if the Democrats want to have a winner, they’re going to have to find somebody else because he’s not the guy, just too much,” he stated.
The controversies include explosive allegations of abuse and new Nazi tattoo claims from ex-partners, which have significantly impacted Platner’s campaign.
Sheila from Harrison, Maine, confirmed that the scandals would “absolutely” influence her voting decision. She believes Platner lacks the necessary judgment and values expected of a congressional representative.
“Anyone who’s representing our country or representing us in Congress needs to be held to a higher standard, and I don’t think he’s got any standards,” she asserted.
Just days before Maine’s Democratic Senate primary, former girlfriends detailed to The New York Times that Platner allegedly engaged in heavy drinking, experienced violent episodes, and discussed rape fantasies. Platner has denied these accusations.
The Marine Corps veteran has also faced scrutiny over a series of other controversies. These include reports of him sending sexually explicit messages to younger women, a tattoo with Nazi affiliations, and online comments that appeared to mock a Purple Heart veteran.
Despite these concerns, some voters remain unfazed by the allegations. When asked if Platner’s comments about women bothered her, Ellen from Acton, Maine, responded, “When it comes to my vote, no.”
“I trust his wife,” Ellen elaborated. “She knows him better than anybody. He is far from perfect. Most of this, my understanding, happened during a tough time in his life. The recent accusations, yes, they’re more recent, but again, I trust her to know who he is morally.”
“I do think that, as a representative of Maine, aside from what he may do in his marriage, he’s going to do a good job for me,” she added.
Jane from Wells, Maine, indicated that her intention to vote for Platner remains unchanged. “I still like him,” she said. “Oh yes. I love him.”
Jessica from Biddeford, Maine, admitted she was not following the controversy surrounding Platner. She explained that she tends to ignore the news, arguing that the media often distracts people from “the issues that are important.”
“We’re better together as one instead of fighting each other over things that don’t matter,” Jessica commented.
Platner is slated to appear on the ballot alongside David Costello in Maine’s Democratic Senate primary scheduled for June 9. The winner of this primary will proceed to challenge incumbent five-term Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the general election this November.
