SouthernWorldwide.com – Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, initiated June’s Pride Month with a post on X, stating that acknowledging the contributions of “queer and transgender” residents to the city would require more than a single month.

Mamdani articulated that honoring the impact of queer and transgender New Yorkers would indeed transcend a 30-day period.

He elaborated by referencing historical milestones, such as the Cercle Hermaphroditos in 1895, recognized as the first trans advocacy group in the United States. He also pointed to the drag balls of the Harlem Renaissance, the Stonewall uprising, the Lesbian Herstory Archives, and ACT UP!, an organization founded in 1987 amidst the AIDS crisis when queer individuals fought for their lives while the Reagan administration reportedly neglected the issue.

Mamdani emphasized that the history of New York City has been profoundly shaped by its queer and trans residents.

The Democratic National Committee also shared a message on X to commemorate Pride Month, encouraging individuals to “Love openly. Live authentically. Happy Pride!”

Various Democratic figures extended their support for Pride Month and the LGBTQ+ community.

Former House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., posted on X, highlighting that #PrideMonth is a time to celebrate love, freedom, and the courage to live authentically. She acknowledged trailblazers and activists from San Francisco to communities nationwide who have advanced the cause of equality and pledged to continue their work.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris also shared her thoughts, describing Pride as joy, courage, and a celebration, as well as an ongoing fight for everyone to live as their authentic selves. She affirmed that the LGBTQ+ community and all those dedicated to the fight for equality are celebrated this month and every month.
