SouthernWorldwide.com – One year after his victorious New York City Democratic primary win, which paved the way for his election as mayor of the nation’s most populous city, Zohran Mamdani is now strategically leveraging his growing political influence to challenge the established Democratic Party leadership.
The 34-year-old democratic-socialist mayor is joining forces with Senator Bernie Sanders, a prominent progressive figure and two-time runner-up in the Democratic presidential primaries. Their collaboration will be highlighted at a get-out-the-vote rally scheduled for Thursday in Brooklyn, New York City, just a week before critical primary elections.
Mamdani and Sanders are united in their objective to support a slate of candidates endorsed by the mayor. This initiative includes two candidates who are directly challenging incumbent Democratic members of Congress. Their overarching goal is to steer the Democratic Party in a more progressive direction.
Among the left-wing candidates receiving Mamdani’s endorsement is Darializa Avila Chevalier, a political organizer. She is currently challenging Representative Adriano Espaillat in New York’s 13th Congressional District, a race that has garnered significant attention. Espaillat, who chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, is backed by numerous party leaders, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
The mayor is also lending his support to Brad Lander, a former New York City Comptroller. Lander had previously competed against Mamdani in last year’s crowded primary but has since become one of his most ardent supporters. Lander is now running against incumbent Democratic Representative Dan Goldman in the 10th Congressional District. Goldman’s campaign has received backing from prominent figures like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
In New York’s 7th Congressional District, which encompasses parts of Brooklyn and Queens, Mamdani has endorsed socialist State Assembly Member Claire Valdez. Valdez is facing off against Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, who is supported by the retiring Representative Nydia Velazquez.
The results of these closely watched races will serve as a crucial test of whether Mamdani’s popularity among New York Democrats can translate into electoral success for his endorsed candidates.
“This is the team. This is our year. It’s up to all of us to get them over the finish line,” Mamdani stated in a social media post promoting the rally.
Mamdani has been a prominent figure for the far-left for the past eighteen months. However, six months into his mayoral term, he has managed to garner support from former critics within the Democratic Party, including Governor Hochul. Notably, he has even received praise from former President Donald Trump.
Despite Trump’s past criticisms, labeling Mamdani a “communist lunatic,” the former president lauded him as a “very rational person” during a highly publicized Oval Office meeting in November, predicting he would do a “really good job.”
“He remains incredibly popular, and it appears he also understands that may not always be the case. That’s why I think you see him flexing his political muscle now. It’s smart politics,” commented a strategist familiar with Sanders’ past presidential campaigns.
The candidates Mamdani is supporting, including those running for state legislative positions, are largely campaigning on the mayor’s platform, which prioritizes affordability in a city known for its exceptionally high cost of living.
Senator Sanders, a native of New York City, who previously attended rallies on Mamdani’s behalf and officiated his mayoral inauguration, remarked, “Now more than ever, we need leaders in Congress who understand firsthand the struggles working people face.”
Mamdani’s endorsement of these congressional candidates, coupled with the rally alongside Sanders, provides Republicans with additional talking points. They have consistently portrayed the mayor as a radical, and this alliance could be used to their advantage as they aim to maintain their narrow House majority in the upcoming midterm elections.
“And during a time when Democrats don’t have a leader or a message, he’s exactly the kind of bogeyman we can use against Democrats to truly show who is leading their party and the crazy policies they all support.”
