These seizures underscore the high volume of illicit substances that criminal organizations continue to attempt to transport across the southern U.S. border, even amidst a notable decrease in overall immigration numbers in recent months.
The first incident occurred on Sunday, May 17, at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. CBP agents flagged a 2013 Honda Civic for a more thorough secondary inspection. Upon utilizing an imaging system, anomalies were detected within the vehicle’s firewall. A subsequent search revealed six packages containing white fentanyl powder, estimated to be worth approximately $113,600, alongside 8.4 pounds of cocaine, valued at an estimated $161,600.

Later the same day, approximately 100 miles away at the Calexico East Port of Entry, another vehicle was subjected to secondary inspection. This time, it was a 2011 Nissan Cube. Following a scan that identified irregularities in the vehicle’s flooring, CBP agents discovered 63 packets of methamphetamine.
Officials from CBP lauded the effectiveness of their officers and the vigilance demonstrated in these operations. Sidney Aki, San Diego Director of Field Operations, emphasized that criminal activities do not cease on weekends and that CBP officers maintain their commitment around the clock.
“Our officers remain vigilant around the clock, and these significant seizures are a direct result of their commitment to keeping dangerous drugs like these from entering our country,” Aki stated, underscoring the dedication of the CBP personnel.

Since the close of 2024, border crossings have seen a dramatic reduction. Data indicates a drop from over 144,000 encounters in December 2024 to a mere 10,000 encounters in April, representing a significant decrease.
Despite the overall reduction in crossings, CBP has continued to report several high-profile smuggling attempts involving various illicit goods and human trafficking. These incidents demonstrate the persistent efforts of criminal organizations to circumvent border security measures.
