SouthernWorldwide.com – Matt Damon recently recounted a frantic flight that almost made him miss a monumental moment in Boston sports history.

The Academy Award-winning actor shared how he drastically altered his travel arrangements to ensure he could witness the Boston Red Sox commence their historic 2004 World Series journey. This pivotal moment followed the team’s dramatic comeback victory against the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series (ALCS).

Damon recounted this story during a recent appearance on Amy Poehler’s podcast, “Good Hang.” The conversation focused on one of the most unforgettable events in Red Sox lore.

At the time of the ALCS, Damon was engaged in filming “Syriana” in Dubai. He was following Boston’s thrilling series against the Yankees from Geneva, Switzerland.

Once the Red Sox secured their spot in the ALCS and advanced to the World Series, Damon was scheduled to continue his filming commitments overseas. However, producer George Clooney intervened.

“I called him immediately, and he said, ‘I already redid the entire schedule. You can go home,'” Damon recalled.

He arrived at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport just as Game 1 of the World Series was kicking off. From there, he rushed directly to his apartment.

“I made it to my apartment by like the second or third inning, and we won that game,” Damon stated.

The actor admitted that he was hesitant to deviate from his routine after Boston’s victory in the opening game. He felt he had discovered a lucky viewing spot.

“Once we won that game, I knew that I had to watch every single moment on that couch by myself,” Damon confessed. “I didn’t want to jinx anything.”

For many generations of Red Sox fans, this championship represented far more than just a title, Damon observed.

“I do feel like something psychically changed for all of us when that happened,” he remarked.

Poehler concurred, noting the significant impact the victory had on her own family.

“I know it did for my family,” she responded. Poehler added that the championship “felt like the Odyssey,” playfully referencing Damon’s upcoming film, “The Odyssey,” which was slated for release that same month.

The Red Sox went on to achieve a clean sweep against the St. Louis Cardinals, winning the 2004 World Series 4-0. This victory marked the franchise’s first championship title since 1918.
