Most Customers Refunded By Spirit Airlines After Shutdown

SouthernWorldwide.com – Spirit Airlines has stated that it has successfully processed refunds for the majority of its customers following its cessation of operations.

The airline indicated that a small remaining percentage of refunds are still being processed, according to a statement provided to CBS News.

Spirit Airlines announced its decision to commence an “orderly wind-down of operations” on early Saturday. This move came after their attempts to secure a $500 million federal bailout proved unsuccessful. The company had previously committed to automatically refunding all customers who purchased tickets using a credit or debit card.

Under federal regulations, consumers are entitled to refunds when a service they’ve paid for is not delivered. This was explained by Eric Rosen, director of travel content at The Points Guy.

However, customers who paid for their tickets with cash or used airline loyalty points are generally not eligible for refunds. Rosen noted that these loyalty points typically cannot be transferred to other airlines’ reward programs.

Spirit Airlines stated on Saturday that passengers who booked flights using vouchers, credits, or Spirit points will have their compensation determined at a later stage through the bankruptcy proceedings.

In the interim, several other airlines have stepped in to assist Spirit passengers whose flights were canceled.

United Airlines, for instance, offered “rescue fares” to stranded Spirit passengers and reported rebooking approximately 14,000 of them onto their own flights. United is also extending these special fares to Spirit customers through May 16.

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, and Southwest Airlines have also announced limited-time discounted fares for Spirit customers affected by the cancellations.

Spirit’s departure from the market creates opportunities for other airlines to fill service gaps on certain routes and expand their market share.

JetBlue, for example, has already introduced 11 new routes from Fort Lauderdale just two days after Spirit’s official announcement. They are also offering a “status match” program for Spirit Frequent Flyers.

For a limited period, JetBlue is providing Spirit Airlines loyalty members with equivalent elite status within JetBlue’s loyalty program.

Data from YouGov, a market research firm, suggests that established carriers like American and United are in a strong position to attract former Spirit fliers.

Approximately 27% of Spirit customers also flew with United in the past year, while 25% booked flights with American Airlines during the same period.

The collapse of Spirit Airlines is expected to send significant ripples throughout the airline industry, impacting a wide range of travelers, not just those who were direct Spirit customers. This is due to the role budget airlines play in keeping overall airfares competitive.

James Ferrara, CEO of the travel advisory company InteleTravel, commented on the situation to CBS News.

“Their presence has historically forced legacy airlines such as American Airlines and United Airlines to remain competitive on pricing, particularly on high-traffic leisure routes,” Ferrara stated.

“Without that pressure, we could see upward pricing trends accelerate, especially in markets where low-cost competition disappears,” he added.

An increase in airfares could potentially price some travelers out of the market, Ferrara warned.

“When an ultra-low-cost carrier like Spirit Airlines suddenly halts operations, it doesn’t just strand passengers physically. It creates a ripple effect across pricing, availability and consumer confidence,” he explained.

“Travelers who relied on Spirit for affordable fares are now forced into a much tighter marketplace, often at significantly higher last-minute prices,” Ferrara concluded.
