SouthernWorldwide.com – North Carolina Governor Josh Stein is facing strong criticism from Republican Congressman Chuck Edwards for the state’s decision not to participate in the Trump-backed America 250 event, specifically the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C.

Edwards accused Governor Stein of prioritizing political divisions over national unity and patriotism. He specifically pointed to the state’s refusal to sponsor a booth representing North Carolina at the fair.

The governor’s office cited budget constraints as the reason for declining the sponsorship. However, Congressman Edwards dismissed this explanation, asserting that North Carolinians are patriots who would gladly celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday.

The Great American State Fair is a 16-day event held on the National Mall, featuring various themes celebrating American history and culture. Every state was offered exhibition space.

A spokesperson for the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources stated that the state’s limited financial resources are being directed towards America 250 events held within North Carolina itself, including one at the State Capitol in Raleigh on July 4th.

Congressman Edwards expressed his disbelief in the budget constraint excuse, calling the state’s decision a clear political statement. He believes it is a partisan move rather than a reflection of fiscal responsibility.

Several other states, predominantly led by Democratic governors, also opted out of the Great American State Fair. These include Rhode Island, Vermont, Massachusetts, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington.

Governors Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Tina Kotek of Oregon are among the Democratic leaders who chose not to participate. Their stated reasons often revolved around concerns that the event might be overly partisan.

The fair is one of several significant events planned to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary in the nation’s capital. Despite the state’s official withdrawal, private sponsors reportedly stepped in to fund North Carolina’s booth.

The North Carolina booth, in the absence of official state backing, became a point of contention due to the inclusion of Confederate flags. These symbols have since been removed by the fair organizers.

Governor Stein publicly condemned the presence of the Confederate flags in a statement. He emphasized that the flag does not represent the North Carolina he loves and that America 250 should be about unity.

He expressed his satisfaction that the flag, which he felt represented division, was removed from the display. North Carolina was part of the Confederacy during the Civil War, but the Confederate flag has never been officially incorporated into the state’s flag design.
