SouthernWorldwide.com – Novak Djokovic secured a dramatic victory in the longest quarterfinal in Wimbledon history on Wednesday, overcoming a heated exchange with a tournament official regarding the Centre Court roof.
The Serbian tennis legend battled past Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in a grueling five-set thriller, ultimately winning 7-6 (12-10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 7-6 (10-4). The match, which lasted an epic 5 hours and 15 minutes, was not without its share of controversy as Djokovic voiced his strong disagreement with tournament supervisor Denise Parnell over the decision to close the roof.
Parnell believed that the encroaching evening conditions necessitated closing the retractable roof after the second set. However, Djokovic strongly advocated for keeping the roof open, arguing that there was still ample daylight and that the tournament was primarily an outdoor event.
“You don’t want to get to 8:30 p.m.? It’s 7:40 p.m. now. We can play a whole another set outdoors. We’re an outdoor tournament,” Djokovic was heard telling Parnell, expressing his frustration.
He further pressed his point by highlighting a perceived inconsistency in the decision-making process, stating, “The other day you didn’t want to close it until 8:30 p.m. Now you want to close it.”
While Parnell seemingly referenced a previous match involving Jannik Sinner, Djokovic insisted that his focus was solely on the current match and that past events were irrelevant to his argument.
“With Jannik, I don’t care what happens in his matches. I’m talking about our match right now,” Djokovic asserted. “You remember the first round? You didn’t close it until like 8:20 p.m. Now you want to close it at 7.:40 p.m. Where’s the consistency?”
His frustration escalated as he accused the officials of not adhering to established rules. “You’re so proud of your rules, and you’re not sticking to any kind of rules. You have no idea what the rule is,” he declared.
Following Djokovic’s impassioned plea and his pointed remarks about the rules, the official announcement was made that the roof would indeed be closed.
Interestingly, Auger-Aliassime appeared to align with Djokovic’s sentiment, interjecting mid-argument with Parnell to ask, “So, for sure we close now?”
Despite not getting his wish to play the third set outdoors, Djokovic went on to win it 6-3. This hard-fought victory propelled him into the Wimbledon semifinals, making him the oldest man to achieve this feat at the tournament in over half a century.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion is now set to face Jannik Sinner, the reigning champion, in a highly anticipated semifinal clash on Centre Court on Friday.
