SouthernWorldwide.com – The Ohio Senate race is set to feature a contest between Jon Husted and Sherrod Brown following projected primary wins on Tuesday.
Sherrod Brown secured his party’s nomination, setting the stage for a significant matchup in the Buckeye State. Jon Husted, on the other hand, ran unopposed in his primary.
This projected outcome promises one of the most financially intensive Senate races of the current election cycle. It marks a potential comeback for Brown, who lost his reelection bid two years prior.
Democrats view Ohio as one of a limited number of states where they have a chance to flip a Senate seat. Controlling the Senate hinges on such victories, and this race is critical for their strategy.
Brown’s previous term in the Senate concluded after he lost to Republican Senator Bernie Moreno in 2024. He had represented Ohio for three terms before that loss.
The margin of Brown’s defeat in 2024 was less than four percentage points. This is notable given that President Trump had won the state by over ten points in the same election cycle.
Democrats are optimistic that evolving midterm dynamics could benefit Brown. His strong name recognition and appeal to the working class in Ohio are considered key assets.
Jon Husted is stepping in to defend the seat for the first time. His previous roles include serving as Ohio’s lieutenant governor and as secretary of state.
Husted also had a decade-long tenure in the state legislature before his executive positions. He was appointed to his current Senate seat last year, filling the vacancy left by Vice President JD Vance.
The 2024 Ohio Senate race was the most expensive of its cycle. This year’s contest is already demonstrating a similar trend of high expenditure.
Republicans are making substantial investments in this race. The Senate Leadership Fund, a prominent Republican PAC, announced its largest advertising reservation to date, amounting to $79 million last month.
On the Democratic side, the Democratic Senate Majority PAC responded with their own significant investment. They announced a $40 million reservation for advertisements that began on Tuesday.
In terms of fundraising for the first quarter, Sherrod Brown significantly outpaced Jon Husted. Federal Election Commission filings show Brown raised $10.1 million, compared to Husted’s $2.9 million.
Looking at their financial reserves heading into the primary, Brown held a substantial lead. He had $17 million in cash on hand, while Husted reported $8.1 million.
Despite this fundraising advantage for Brown, Democrats still face a challenging path in Ohio. The state is considered a tough battleground for their broader goal of regaining control of the Senate.
Republicans are defending a larger number of Senate seats in the upcoming midterms. However, many of these seats are in states that Donald Trump won with considerable margins in the previous presidential election.
Democrats, facing the defense of several open seats and limited opportunities for gains, need to secure a net gain of four seats to achieve a Senate majority.
Their prospects for taking control of the Senate have reportedly improved in recent weeks. This shift is attributed to factors such as the ongoing war with Iran and persistent economic concerns related to affordability.

These issues are seen as potentially impacting the Republican Party’s midterm ambitions, creating openings for Democratic gains in key states like Ohio.
