SouthernWorldwide.com – The Indiana Pacers’ strategic gamble in the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery did not pay off, as their top pick was forfeited in a disappointing turn of events on Sunday afternoon.

Prior to the lottery, the Pacers, who finished with a 19-63 record just one season after reaching the NBA Finals from the Eastern Conference, held a significant 52.1% probability of securing a top-four selection.

However, the team faced dismay when their name was not called among the first four picks. Indiana also had a 14% chance of obtaining the No. 1 overall pick, intensifying the concern.

The predicament arose from a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers for Ivica Zubac. The Pacers had included their first-round pick in this deal, but with a crucial stipulation: it was top-four protected. This meant the Pacers would retain the pick if it fell within the top four selections.

Unfortunately for Indiana, their selection landed at No. 5, consequently transferring ownership of the pick to the Clippers for the upcoming draft.

In the aftermath, Kevin Pritchard, the Pacers’ president of basketball operations, publicly accepted full accountability for the decision and issued an apology to the fanbase via social media.

“I’m really sorry to all our fans,” Pritchard stated on X. “I own taking this risk. Surprised it came up 5th after this year. I thought we were due some luck. But please remember – this team deserved a starting center to compete with the best teams next year. We have always been resilient.”

The Pacers had been perceived as a team deliberately tanking, despite the NBA’s efforts to deter such strategies, with the lottery system being a key deterrent. This particular outcome, however, demonstrated the effectiveness of the system in this instance.

Pritchard’s attempt at transparency with the Pacers’ supporters was met with swift reactions from fans expressing their dissatisfaction in the comments section.

“You lose Myles Turner and add Zubac,” one X user commented. “You lose [Benedict] Mathurin and the number 5 pick with absolutely nothing in return. This is why fans are upset, for a center who is not even a top 5 center in the NBA. Who trades their future away for Ivan [sic] Zubac???”

Another user lamented the situation, describing it as a “generational draft” and expressing disbelief that the Pacers would not be participating in selecting from such a talent-rich class.

“If I were a Pacers fan and my team traded away a top 5 pick for Ivica Zubac in the middle of a tanking season I would be beyond devastated,” a fellow X user wrote.

The Pacers played without their All-Star point guard, Tyrese Haliburton, for the entire season due to an Achilles injury sustained during the NBA Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Nevertheless, Indiana retains core players from that Finals team, including Pascal Siakam, Andrew Nembhard, and Aaron Nesmith, who are expected to return next season.

The 2026 draft class is particularly noteworthy, with many anticipating it to be exceptionally deep, featuring highly regarded prospects such as AJ Dybantsa from BYU, Darryn Peterson from Kansas, Caleb Wilson from UNC, and Cam Boozer from Duke, among others.
