SouthernWorldwide.com – The San Diego Padres have officially parted ways with outfielder Nick Castellanos, designating him for assignment on Wednesday.
This decision comes just a day after Castellanos received a video tribute during his return to Philadelphia, a city where he previously played.
Castellanos was released by the Philadelphia Phillies in February, prior to their first full-squad workout for spring training. This release occurred despite the Phillies still owing him $20 million for the final year of his substantial five-year, $100 million contract.
The Padres opted to take a chance on the outfielder, signing him for the league minimum, which was approximately $780,000 for the current season.
However, Castellanos was unable to recapture his previous form during his limited tenure with San Diego. He struggled offensively, posting a .191 batting average and a .560 OPS.
In his 39 games with the Padres, Castellanos managed to hit only four home runs and drive in 20 runs.
Castellanos had spent four seasons with the Phillies. Notably, he was not in the starting lineup for the team’s 3-2 victory against the Padres on Tuesday night, the same game where he was honored.
Following the video tribute, which showcased some of his notable sliding catches during his time with the Phillies, Castellanos acknowledged the cheering fans by tipping his cap.
In a corresponding move, the Padres have selected the contract of infielder/outfielder Samad Taylor from their Triple-A affiliate, El Paso, in preparation for Wednesday’s game.
