Progressive in Maine Refuses to Back Schumer, Even with Unified Democratic Support for Collins Challenger

SouthernWorldwide.com – Graham Platner, a progressive candidate for the U.S. Senate in Maine, has stated that he will not support Senator Chuck Schumer as the Democratic leader, even after Democrats have unified behind him as the challenger to Senator Susan Collins.

Platner, an oyster farmer and a veteran of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, expressed his stance following a conversation with Schumer himself. He described the discussion as “perfectly cordial” and highlighted a shared sentiment that “nothing brings people together like agreeing that Susan Collins shouldn’t be in the U.S. Senate.”

Platner secured the Democratic nomination after his primary opponent, Governor Janet Mills, withdrew from the race. Mills had been supported by Schumer, who had actively recruited her to run.

Despite this, Platner remains firm in his decision not to back Schumer for leadership. He indicated that the topic of his support for the Democratic leader did not arise during his conversation with Schumer.

Platner is part of a growing group of progressive Senate candidates who have declared their intention not to support Schumer if elected. He is advocating for an economically populist agenda, focusing on corporate influences and advocating for the working class.

In contrast, Senator Susan Collins, a Republican seeking her sixth term, has suggested that Maine voters will find Platner too extreme. She stated, “I believe that will be the conclusion of Maine voters. But, obviously, I don’t take anything for granted.”

Platner, however, counters that it is Collins who is “radical.” He argues that his platform, which focuses on lowering costs for working Mainers, addressing housing affordability, and reforming the healthcare system, is not radical but rather what most Mainers agree on.

He further criticizes Collins for decades of policies that he claims benefit corporations and billionaires at the expense of working people, and for her support of foreign wars. Platner specifically mentioned her vote to send troops to Iraq and her continued support for the war in Iran.

The Republican campaign has already begun targeting Platner. An advertisement from a group supporting Collins highlights controversial comments Platner made over a decade ago on Reddit regarding rape and a tattoo on his chest that resembled a Nazi symbol.

Platner has apologized for his past Reddit posts and explained that the tattoo was acquired during his service in Croatia and that he has since covered it. He remains unfazed by these attacks, stating that he is confident he can handle them, drawing from his military experience.

He believes that the Democratic establishment’s previous attempts to use similar attacks against him failed and anticipates the Republican campaign will also fail. Platner suggests that Mainers understand the nature of these attacks and are increasingly weary of negative advertising.

Platner has also faced questions about more recent Reddit posts where he described himself as a “communist” and “socialist.” He explained these comments were made in jest as part of online arguments, a practice he referred to as “shitposting.”

The candidate recently cast an early voting ballot and held an event to unveil his energy plan, which aims to reduce energy costs for citizens. His proposal includes eliminating the national gas and diesel tax, freezing electricity rate increases, and establishing a fund for clean energy projects.

Platner emphasized the importance of his energy plan, calling it “very central” to his campaign and an “existential crisis” for working families in Maine due to high energy costs.

Democrats are focusing on the cost of living as a key issue in the midterm elections, hoping to regain control of Congress. Republicans, as the party in power, face traditional headwinds, exacerbated by inflation, rising gas prices linked to the war in Iran, and President Trump’s approval ratings.

When asked about overcoming blame for the high cost of living, Senator Collins highlighted her support for programs like the low-income heating assistance program and her opposition to cuts in food stamp benefits, emphasizing their importance to low-income families in Maine.
