SouthernWorldwide.com – On the recent episode of “SmackDown” in Lexington, Kentucky, a highly anticipated match between Sami Zayn and Cody Rhodes took an unexpected turn, leaving fans in shock.
The confrontation stemmed from Zayn’s growing frustration over his perceived lack of spotlight and feeling sidelined within the WWE. After voicing his concerns to SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis, Zayn’s comments, particularly his jab at Cody Rhodes as the “golden boy,” caught the attention of “The American Nightmare” himself, leading to the hastily arranged match.
Rhodes entered the bout with the looming threat of Gunther, his challenger for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Clash in Italy, potentially making a surprise appearance. The animosity between Rhodes and Gunther had intensified in recent weeks, especially after Paul Heyman facilitated Gunther’s opportunity for a title shot.
Zayn, seeking a significant contest, certainly got his wish. The match was a hard-fought battle from the outset, with both competitors exchanging fierce blows and strategizing to gain the upper hand.
Rhodes attempted to end the match quickly, heading to the ropes for what appeared to be a Cody Cutter or a Disaster Kick. However, Zayn anticipated the move, catching Rhodes and sending him crashing to the floor. Zayn then capitalized, focusing his offense on Rhodes’ injured left knee.
Despite the relentless assault on his knee, Rhodes displayed remarkable resilience. He fought through the pain, managing to execute a Cody Cutter seemingly out of nowhere. Zayn, however, proved difficult to keep down. After a near fall, Zayn skillfully flipped Rhodes onto the apron. Rhodes, visibly shaken, staggered back into the ring just before the referee’s ten count.
As Rhodes re-entered, Zayn attempted a Helluva Kick but missed. Rhodes seized the opportunity, countering with a Cody Cutter that resulted in another two-count. Zayn then tried to secure the victory with a Blue Thunder Bomb, but Rhodes kicked out once more.
Just as Rhodes was preparing to deliver his signature Cross Rhodes, Gunther made his presence known, applying a sleeperhold that went unnoticed by the referee. In the ensuing chaos, Zayn, bouncing off the ropes, inadvertently knocked Gunther to the floor as Rhodes managed to evade the hold. Rhodes then capitalized on the distraction, hitting a weakened Zayn with a Cross Rhodes for the win.

Following the match, Gunther re-entered the ring and immediately renewed his assault on Rhodes. Zayn, who had gotten back into the ring, stood and stared down Gunther. It seemed as though a confrontation between Zayn and Gunther was imminent.
However, in a shocking turn of events, Gunther ignored Zayn and continued to choke out Rhodes. Zayn, displaying a look of resignation, shook his head and turned his back on the unfolding attack, walking away and seemingly abandoning Cody Rhodes to Gunther’s mercy.
In other WWE news, Jade Cargill has expressed her determination to reclaim the WWE Women’s Championship from Rhea Ripley, who defeated her at WrestleMania 40. Ripley, feeling provoked by recent attacks from Cargill and her associates, Michin and B-Fab, issued a direct challenge.
“Jade and her crew decided to try to send a message. But all they managed to do was really p— me off. So, now that I’m back, I’m itching for a fight,” Ripley declared. “So Jade, if you want your rematch, then I will happily beat you again.”
Ripley proposed that the rematch take place at Clash in Italy for the WWE Women’s Championship. Cargill appeared to accept this challenge as she, Michin, and B-Fab later emerged to attack Ripley and Charlotte Flair after their tag team match against Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid. The trio neutralized Ripley, Flair, and Alexa Bliss, sending a clear message ahead of their scheduled six-woman tag team match at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Flair and Bliss had previously interrupted Ripley’s promo, reminding her of their upcoming match and the importance of staying focused.
