Senator Demands Increased Deportations Following Alarming Immigration Data

SouthernWorldwide.com – A policy analyst’s testimony during a House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing unexpectedly became a focal point for immigration hardliners, particularly after he presented data on the immigrant population in Fairfax County.

The hearing, led by Rep. Thomas McClintock, R-Calif., focused on allegations of lenient prosecution of illegal immigrants with criminal records by Fairfax County prosecutor Stephen Descano. One notable case involved a national of Sierra Leone accused of a murder at a U.S. 1 bus stop.

David Bier, an immigration expert from the libertarian think tank Cato Institute, delivered opening remarks. He argued that the solution for Fairfax County was not to pursue the “mass deportation” strategy advocated by former President Donald Trump.

“The first step would be to give up on the mass deportation fantasy,” Bier stated.

Bier presented a statistic suggesting that approximately one in five residents in Fairfax County are either individuals who could be deported or live with such individuals. He warned that a mass deportation effort would have severe consequences.

“It would destroy neighborhoods, rip Americans away from their spouses, parents, friends, families, customers, employees, employers, nurses, nannies, and teachers,” Bier elaborated.

While Bier later clarified his belief that noncitizens who commit crimes against Americans should be deported, his initial statement caught the attention of several immigration hawks, including Senator Mike Lee of Utah.

Senator Lee seized upon Bier’s statistic to bolster the argument for mass deportation as the correct approach to immigration policy.

“On the contrary: 20% of a wealthy DC suburb being illegal immigrants means we should redouble our efforts to deport them all,” Lee declared.

Bier responded to Senator Lee’s interpretation, questioning the senator’s reasoning and the basis for his conclusion. He pointed out that the senator had not provided an explanation for how harming Fairfax County and its residents would benefit the nation.

“The senator is wrong to characterize the 20% as all illegal immigrants since half of them are just people who live with illegal immigrants, which is precisely my point,” Bier explained. He reiterated that mass deportation would negatively impact American citizens by separating them from their loved ones and essential community members.

Bier further argued that the practicality and cost of mass deportation increase with the size of the undocumented population, suggesting that the current trajectory would ultimately harm American citizens.

“I would ask the senator: how many Americans would have to be hurt by mass deportation before he would reconsider his views?” Bier posed.

A spokesperson for the hearing asserted that the stories of victims and the presented facts speak for themselves, and that “sanctuary politicians of Fairfax County have blood on their hands.”

Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin also commented on the situation, stating that half of the recent murders in Fairfax were allegedly committed by individuals who should not have been in the country.

“We have politicians who want to protect the criminals, President Trump is still protecting all of our neighborhoods,” Mullin added.

Bier’s 1-in-5 statistic was also referenced in a document from the Cato Institute, which cited data from the Migration Policy Institute (MPI). MPI’s data indicated an estimated 102,000 “unauthorized” individuals in Fairfax County, which had a census population of approximately 1.2 million in 2020.

The primary countries of origin for these individuals, according to MPI’s data, were El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Bolivia, and Peru. A combined 4% of the unauthorized population was recorded from Canada, Europe, and Oceania.
