Senator: Trump’s Top Election Goal ‘Dead’ in Senate Amid GOP Midterm Split

SouthernWorldwide.com – A prominent Republican senator has stated that even if President Donald Trump’s signature election integrity legislation had sufficient support to pass, there wouldn’t be enough time for it to be implemented before the upcoming midterm elections.

The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act has become a significant challenge for congressional Republicans. They are eager to shift focus to other essential legislation that must be passed. However, Trump has consistently urged them to find a way, particularly in the Senate, to pass this bill by any means necessary.

The bill faces internal division within the Republican party and strong opposition from Democrats. Senator Thom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina, argued that even if the bill garnered the unlikely 60 votes needed for passage, it would not have a practical effect in time for the November elections.

GOP INFIGHTING OVER TRUMP’S VOTER ID BILL ERUPTS AS TOP SENATOR CALLS STRATEGY ‘FANTASY’

“Unless they do the work to get to the 60 votes, they know it’s dead, and so all this is theater,” Tillis told the News & Observer, a publication based in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Tillis, who was one of four Senate Republicans to vote against attaching the legislation to an immigration enforcement funding bill last month and subsequently faced criticism from Trump, has experience advocating for voter ID laws. Voter ID is only one component of the proposed SAVE America Act.

During his tenure as House speaker in the North Carolina legislature, he was a leading proponent of implementing the state’s voter ID law.

However, he emphasized that such implementation requires considerable time and financial resources.

“And, honestly, here in North Carolina, or in virtually any state, the ability, if we go back to when we implemented voter ID in North Carolina, it took a year to get everything in place with adequate funding,” Tillis explained.

The current version of the SAVE America Act does not directly provide funding to states for the implementation of voter ID or its other provisions. This is a key reason why the legislation would not be compatible with the budget reconciliation process, a method Trump has advocated for and House Republicans are considering. Reconciliation requires provisions to have a direct budgetary impact, rather than being solely policy-focused.

Tillis outlined a hypothetical scenario where, even if all aspects aligned perfectly, the implementation timeline would encroach upon or completely eliminate early voting periods.

“Let’s assume you only allow early voting in the month of October,” Tillis said. “Then do you honestly believe that we can have this thing up in 50 states? There’s no funding. There’s no specific implementation instructions.”

SUPREME COURT RULES ON MAIL-IN BALLOTS RECEIVED AFTER ELECTION DAY

“It’s become a joke, in my mind, for somebody that’s actually implemented voter ID law, how anybody can look the American voters in the eye and suggest that it could be implemented in time without just causing a huge impact on the elections and ironically undermine the confidence of it,” he added.

Despite these practical concerns, a group of congressional Republicans, notably Senator Mike Lee of Utah and Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, continue to press for Senate action on the bill.

Trump is reportedly determined to pressure Republicans into passing the legislation. He has called for them to abolish the filibuster, attach the SAVE America Act to essential legislation, or remove the Senate’s rules referee.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision that allows mail-in ballots to be counted after Election Day, Trump reiterated his demand for the bill’s passage.

“In light of the tremendous loss in the Supreme Court today concerning Voter’s Rights, and the fact that ‘people’s’ votes are allowed to be counted LONG AFTER an Election is over, it is more important than ever to pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
