New research indicates that even a single exercise session can significantly reduce the immediate urge to smoke. However, the effectiveness is influenced by the type and intensity of the physical activity undertaken.

A comprehensive review of 59 randomized controlled trials, involving over 9,000 adult participants, revealed that high-intensity aerobic exercise is the most effective form of physical activity for diminishing smokers’ cravings.

The authors of the study, which was published in the Journal of Sport and Health Science, stated that a single bout of exercise was found to reduce acute cravings immediately and for up to 30 minutes post-exercise, though it did not appear to impact longer-term cravings.

The research team also highlighted other significant findings from their investigation into “exercise-based interventions for smoking cessation.”

According to their findings, engaging in exercise training increased the likelihood of individuals abstaining from smoking by 15% to 21% compared to those who did not exercise.

Furthermore, regular exercise was associated with smokers reducing their daily cigarette consumption by an average of two cigarettes.

Beyond being a readily available and cost-effective method for reducing smoking, exercise also proves beneficial in alleviating anxiety and stress, two common triggers that often lead individuals to smoke.

The study’s authors suggest that exercise enhances the body’s production of feel-good hormones, such as dopamine, while simultaneously lowering the stress hormone cortisol. This physiological response can make smokers feel less inclined to seek nicotine as a form of brain reward.

In conclusion, the researchers recommended that exercise should be integrated into existing smoking cessation programs to improve the success rates of quitting.

They also pointed out that none of the trials examined in their review specifically addressed vaping. Therefore, they suggested that future research should focus on the use of electronic cigarettes.
