Surprise Charges for Cruise Buffet Food Taken to Cabins

SouthernWorldwide.com – Costa Cruises, an Italian cruise line, has reportedly begun implementing a new policy that could result in passengers facing charges for taking food from the buffet back to their cabins.

This new rule, which was communicated to guests on specific sailings, warns of a €60 cleaning fee, approximately $70 USD, for any buffet food found in passenger cabins.

According to the cruise blog Crew Center, the cruise line stated that this measure is a “preventive and deterrent measure, in line with our existing policies, to encourage guests to [have] responsible behavior.”

A spokesperson for Costa Cruises emphasized that the company is committed to ensuring a high-quality, safe, and enjoyable experience for all guests on board.

The policy dictates that only room service staff, who are trained in sanitation and hygiene, are permitted to transport and deliver food to guest cabins. All food is meant to be consumed exclusively in designated dining areas.

The news of this policy has sparked discussion among cruise passengers on social media, with varied reactions being shared.

Some travelers expressed understanding for the cruise line’s decision, citing issues with dirty plates and cups being left in hallways outside of cabins.

“I don’t blame the cruise line for implementing certain rules,” one commenter wrote. “One thing I hate to see is plates [and] cups in the hallways by room doors. If you bring them there, [carry] them back or just eat in eating areas!”

Another commenter echoed this sentiment, stating, “I don’t blame [the cruise line] … if you’re gonna go get food from the buffet, bring the dirty plates back to the buffet. I mean try to have some class.”

However, not all passengers agreed with the new policy.

A dissenting voice argued, “Zero chance I’d pay that fine. Make breakfast in bed for my wife every morning by bringing food back. Who cares where you eat the included food.”

“We love to take our food and coffee to enjoy on our quiet balcony,” another passenger shared, indicating a preference for enjoying meals in their cabin.

Concerns were also raised about potential additional charges from cruise lines.

“Cruise lines have enough problems without having more charges,” one commenter stated.

Costa Cruises, headquartered in Genoa, Italy, operates sailings across various popular destinations, including the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and South America.
