SouthernWorldwide.com – Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico is openly embracing the “Talafreako” nickname, originally coined by his Republican opponent Ken Paxton. He has even begun selling merchandise featuring the slogan “I’m a Talafreako.”
During a general election kickoff event in Houston this week, Talarico urged his supporters to purchase the t-shirts. He stated that he was proud to announce the availability of “I’m a Talafreako” t-shirts on their website, encouraging attendees to get one after the event.
Following Talarico’s speech, the crowd at the Houston rally erupted in repeated chants of “Talafreako.”
Despite this show of confidence, some analysts suggest that this strategy might alienate moderate Texas voters, especially given Talarico’s controversial past remarks. These remarks include statements such as “God is nonbinary,” the assertion that there are six genders, and the claim that the Bible supports abortion.
A strategist commented that selling merchandise with “Talafreako” on it would only serve to remind voters that Talarico holds positions contrary to popular opinion on key issues. The strategist described the situation as “so weird.”
Senator Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., shared a clip of Talarico expressing affection for transgender-identifying children. Schmitt posted on X, suggesting that Talarico was “constructed in a Woke Lab” and that such a candidate would not succeed.
Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who is set to become the senior senator for the state, also took to X. He declared that Texas would never elect someone who believes “God is nonbinary.”
Earlier in the campaign, Talarico was criticized for what some termed a “creepy” comment about transgender children.
A campaign spokesperson, Koch, noted that Talarico has demonstrated his ability to engage in political combat. Koch highlighted Talarico’s opening move in the general election, where he characterized Ken Paxton as the most corrupt politician in the country and accused him of making “Epstein-style sweetheart deals to pedophiles.”
Koch added that the Democratic candidate has proven he can stand his ground and intends to frame the race as a direct choice between himself and Paxton.
At the Houston kickoff rally, Talarico strongly denounced Paxton, labeling him the “most corrupt politician in America” who has “sold us out for years.”
Talarico pledged that if elected to the Senate, his immediate action would be to introduce a “comprehensive anti-corruption package.” This package would reportedly include prohibitions on “unlimited donations” from corporate PACs and super PACs, a ban on congressional stock trading, the implementation of term limits, and a national ban on gerrymandering. He also indicated that the package would aim to “overhaul” the Supreme Court.
Talarico addressed the criticisms he anticipates, stating that his opponents would “throw everything they’ve got at us.” He acknowledged being called a “radical leftist,” a “fake Christian,” and even a “vegan,” noting that these labels are considered “fighting words in the state of Texas.”
He continued, predicting that they will be labeled a “threat.” Talarico asserted that the only truth in their accusations is that they are indeed a threat, but a threat to a “corrupt system.”
In an interview on MS NOW, Talarico contrasted his own record with that of Ken Paxton. He stated, “Ken Paxton has a criminal record. I have a legislative record.”
He presented himself as a bipartisan legislator, highlighting his record over four terms in the Texas House of Representatives. Talarico claimed to have united Democrats and Republicans to pass over 60 bipartisan bills aimed at reducing property taxes, increasing teacher salaries, and lowering the costs of housing, prescription drugs, and childcare across Texas. He expressed his willingness to compare this legislative record with Paxton’s “criminal record any day of the week, twice on Sunday.”

Meanwhile, Paxton has portrayed Talarico as excessively progressive. On Thursday, Paxton posted on X that “James Talarico is too radical for California, let alone Texas.”
