SouthernWorldwide.com – Interior Secretary Doug Burgum is defending President Donald Trump’s numerous initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure in Washington, D.C., asserting that these efforts serve as a tangible reminder that the nation must actively resist decline.
“From the rehabilitation and installation of historic memorials, statues, and fountains to the removal of hundreds of instances of graffiti and the cleanup of crime on our streets, this administration is demonstrating that American greatness is forged through action,” Burgum stated.
Burgum’s remarks come in anticipation of the United States’ 250th Independence Day anniversary. His reasoning seeks to counter recent criticisms leveled against the administration, which have questioned the value of Trump’s extensive renovation and construction projects in Washington, D.C., particularly concerning their cost.

As part of the preparations for the 250th celebration, significant funds have been allocated to various projects. These include $14.7 million for the restoration of the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool, $250 million for the Kennedy Center’s restoration, and an anticipated expenditure of over $400 million for the construction of a ballroom at the White House.
President Trump himself, in an update on Truth Social regarding the reflecting pool project, framed these undertakings as part of a broader agenda.
“We have cleaned, renovated, and beautified over 45 monuments and memorials, 28 statues, and 22 fountains in Washington, D.C. Things are truly looking good in our nation’s capital. Furthermore, when I became president, crime was rampant. Now, Washington, D.C. is one of the safest cities anywhere in the United States,” Trump wrote.

The Department of the Interior, which has been instrumental in overseeing many of these improvements, provided an updated list of its achievements leading up to July 4th.
The city has seen the removal of 510 graffiti instances, the dismantling of 154 homeless encampments, the application of 212 tons of repair materials to roads and parkways, the restoration of 280,000 square feet of roadway paving, the rehabilitation of 1,301 benches, and the repair of 1,913 lights.
Burgum emphasized that these repairs exemplify the administration’s proactive approach to resolving issues that had been neglected in the past. Beyond these major infrastructure enhancements, the Department of the Interior has also restored and cleaned numerous monuments and statues throughout D.C.
The Department of the Interior also recently played a key role in transforming Meridian Hill Park. This effort, which garnered significant positive attention on social media from D.C. residents, has made the park a more appealing destination. The restoration included a fountain that had been under construction for years with minimal progress. Additionally, statues within the park, such as the Joan of Arc statue and the James Buchanan Memorial, were cleaned and restored.

“While others resign themselves to decline, President Trump and the Department of the Interior are revitalizing the heart of our nation’s capital,” Burgum declared. “The Golden Age of America is not merely a slogan; it is being rebuilt, one landmark, one street, and one victory at a time.”
