SouthernWorldwide.com – President Donald Trump has expanded the diplomatic role of the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, appointing him as special envoy to Syria and Iraq.
This strategic move aims to foster lasting peace and advance U.S. cooperation in the Middle East. Trump announced the appointment via a post on his Truth Social platform, highlighting Barrack’s previous outstanding performance.
“I am pleased to announce that United States Ambassador to Türkiye, Tom Barrack, who has done an outstanding job, will be named Special Presidential Envoy to Syria and, likewise, Special Presidential Envoy to Iraq, as we advance our strategic cooperation with the Governments of Syria and Iraq, our relationship with them continues to grow,” Trump stated.
Syria, historically a site of proxy conflicts involving Iran, has shown recent inclinations towards peace with the Trump administration and Israel. Turkey, a neighboring country to both Iraq and Syria, has played a guiding role in this shift.
Barrack will continue to serve as Ambassador to Turkey while undertaking these new responsibilities, operating with the full support of the U.S. Department of State. Trump expressed his appreciation for Barrack’s dedication and continued willingness to serve the country.
The announcement coincided with high-stakes negotiations between the U.S. and Iran. Simultaneously, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards reportedly launched new attacks targeting separatist groups in northern Iraq, according to Reuters.
Barrack’s expanded mandate places him at the nexus of several critical regional issues. These include the future of U.S. engagement in Syria, the stability of Iraq, Turkey’s influence as a regional mediator, and the broader implications of the U.S.-Iran conflict.
This development follows earlier reports indicating Barrack’s significant involvement in shaping U.S. policy toward Syria. He had reportedly been engaged in discussions with President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding the administration’s strategy for dealing with Damascus.
The president’s announcement occurred during a period of heightened diplomatic activity over the weekend. Trump had not yet finalized a decision on a proposed Iran agreement, with recent reports suggesting he requested modifications to a draft deal negotiated by his envoys. These requested changes reportedly included stricter provisions concerning Iran’s nuclear materials.
The core objectives of the administration’s peace initiatives have focused on preventing Iran from developing or acquiring nuclear weapons. Additionally, the U.S. seeks the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the establishment of terms that Trump has characterized as more stringent than previous proposals. The Strait of Hormuz remains a key point of contention due to its vital role in global energy transportation.
The attacks in northern Iraq underscored the persistent risk of the conflict spilling across borders, even as diplomatic efforts are underway. Iranian forces have consistently targeted Kurdish opposition groups based in Iraq’s Kurdistan region, alleging they pose a threat to Iran’s security. These attacks have intensified pressure on the governments in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government, complicating U.S. endeavors to stabilize Iraq.
