Trump Pushes for Permanent Daylight Saving Time to End Clock Changes

SouthernWorldwide.com – Former President Donald Trump is expressing strong support for eliminating the biannual clock changes by implementing permanent daylight saving time.

This initiative has been incorporated into a broader legislative measure. The House Energy and Commerce Committee advanced this larger bill with a decisive 48-1 vote on Thursday.

Trump took to Truth Social to announce the significant vote. He highlighted that the bill includes the Sunshine Protection Act, which aims to make daylight saving time a permanent fixture. He emphasized the substantial financial savings this would bring, noting that hundreds of millions of dollars are currently spent annually by individuals, cities, and states to adjust their clocks. He pointed out the considerable expense associated with changing clocks, particularly those in towers, requiring heavy equipment.

TRUMP SAYS CONGRESS SHOULD PUSH ‘FOR MORE DAYLIGHT AT THE END OF A DAY’

The former president believes it’s time for people to no longer be concerned with changing clocks. He also stressed the avoidance of the work and money wasted on what he described as a “ridiculous, twice yearly production.” Trump sees this as a significant win for the Republican Party, advocating for the more popular choice of “Saving Daylight,” which he argues provides a longer, brighter day. He finds it hard to imagine anyone opposing this straightforward proposal.

The office of Representative Vern Buchanan, a Republican from Florida, issued a press release on Thursday. It stated that the Sunshine Protection Act was included as a provision within an Amendment in the Nature of a Substitute (AINS). This AINS was part of the Motor Vehicle Modernization Act, which was marked up and sent to the House floor by the House Energy and Commerce Committee on that day.

It is important to note that this push for permanent daylight saving time is not limited to one party. The legislation boasts 32 bipartisan cosponsors in the House. Furthermore, companion legislation in the Senate, S. 29, introduced by Senator Rick Scott of Florida, also has 18 bipartisan cosponsors, according to Buchanan’s release.

The proposed legislation includes a provision that would not force a state currently not observing daylight saving time to begin doing so. This respects the autonomy of states to decide on their time observance practices.

In a previous Truth Social post last year, Trump had already called on Congress to address the issue of daylight saving time. He urged them to prioritize the benefits of extended daylight.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS: IT’S ABOUT THE SUNLIGHT

He declared in an April 2025 post that the House and Senate should vigorously pursue extending daylight hours at the end of the day. He reiterated that this is a highly popular idea and, more importantly, would eliminate the inconvenience and significant cost incurred by the government due to the biannual clock changes.
