SouthernWorldwide.com – President Donald Trump has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), voicing his frustrations in a series of social media posts on Thursday.

Trump highlighted the significant financial contributions of the United States to NATO, stating that the U.S. spends far more than any other nation to protect its allies, without receiving proportionate benefits in return. He cited figures for estimated defense expenditures from 2014 to 2025, showing the U.S. at $999 billion, followed by the United Kingdom at $90.5 billion, France at $66.5 billion, Italy at $48.8 billion, and Poland at $44.3 billion. He noted that other countries, including Germany, contribute much less, calling the situation “ridiculous” in a Truth Social post.

A NATO release, which specifies that the data cutoff for its report was June 3, 2025, and that figures for 2024 and 2025 are estimates, listed the projected U.S. defense expenditure for 2025 at $980 billion. The United Kingdom’s estimated expenditure was $90.508 billion, France’s $66.531 billion, Italy’s $48.8 billion, and Poland’s $44.314 billion.

Despite President Trump’s consistent criticism of NATO over the years, a recent poll indicates that most of his supporters continue to back the alliance.

The commander-in-chief of the United States further criticized NATO in another post on Thursday night. He described it as “ridiculous” for the U.S. to continue on a “one sided path” where the relationship is not reciprocal, emphasizing that the allies “were not there for us!!!”

These vocal complaints from President Trump come just ahead of the alliance’s upcoming summit, scheduled to take place in Ankara, Turkey, next week. President Trump is expected to attend this summit.

Previously, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had praised President Trump’s strategy regarding Iran and addressed the President’s frustrations with member states.

Trump had a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House last month.

President Trump’s criticism of NATO has been particularly pronounced amid the U.S. conflict with Iran.

An advisor to former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher stated that Trump was “right to be outraged” by Europe’s stance on Iran.

In mid-April, Trump posted on Truth Social that after the situation in the Strait of Hormuz concluded, he received a call from NATO offering assistance. He recounted telling them to “stay away, unless they just want to load up their ships with oil,” calling them “useless when needed, a Paper Tiger!”
