Trump: Xi Said US Was Declining Under Biden

SouthernWorldwide.com – Former President Donald Trump seized on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s remarks during high-stakes meetings in Beijing, framing them as a political attack on former President Joe Biden.

Trump asserted on Truth Social that when Xi alluded to the United States as a potentially declining nation, he was referencing the perceived damage sustained during the Biden administration. Trump stated that on this point, Xi was “100% correct.”

Following a welcoming ceremony with considerable fanfare on Wednesday night, Xi invoked the concept of the “Thucydides Trap” in his opening remarks. This historical theory posits the likelihood of conflict when a rising power challenges an established one.

Trump countered that President Xi was not referring to the United States’ perceived resurgence during the Trump administration. He cited all-time high stock markets, robust 401(k)s, military successes, and a strengthened relationship with Venezuela as examples of this revival.

He further claimed that the United States was the “hottest Nation anywhere in the world” and expressed hope for an even stronger and better relationship with China.

Trump elaborated that the U.S. had “suffered immeasurably” under Biden-era policies, which he characterized as open borders, increased taxes, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and the promotion of “transgender for everybody,” alongside sanctuary city ordinances.

He acknowledged that the nation was indeed “in decline” two years prior, aligning with Xi’s observation.

While Xi’s “Thucydides Trap” reference was not a direct declaration of Western decline, it brought to the forefront a geopolitical theory concerning the risks of conflict between emerging and established powers. This occurred as Xi also raised the possibility of future U.S.-China clashes, particularly concerning Taiwan.

The “Thucydides Trap” has been a recurring theme in U.S.-China policy discussions, reflecting anxieties that China’s ascendance could lead to confrontation with Washington.

Trump quoted Xi as stating that the peoples of China and the United States are both great. He added that the “great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand.”

According to Trump, Xi also agreed that the two nations could “help each other succeed and advance the well-being of the whole world.”

Trump further claimed that Xi and he agreed to foster a “constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability” to ensure the “steady, sound and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations.” This, he stated, would bring “more peace, prosperity and progress to the world.”

The article notes that former President Biden’s personal history with Xi dates back to their time as vice presidents.

However, as president, Biden’s engagement with Xi has been characterized by an ongoing strategic rivalry. The two leaders met in Bali in 2022 and California in 2023, as both Washington and Beijing sought to stabilize their relationship amidst disputes over Taiwan, the alleged Chinese spy balloon incident, fentanyl, and other contentious issues.

Xi reportedly told Trump during the opening remarks, following the welcome ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, that the two nations “should be partners, not rivals.”

He also expressed that they “should help each other succeed and prosper together and find the right way for major countries to get along well with each other in the new era.”
