SouthernWorldwide.com – Former President Donald Trump elicited a starkly different response from the crowd at Madison Square Garden for Game 3 of the NBA Finals compared to his appearance at the College Football National Championship earlier this year.
During the national anthem at the NBA Finals, a video of Trump, accompanied by his granddaughter Kai Trump and Knicks owner James Dolan, was shown on the Jumbotron. The reaction from the sold-out crowd was noticeably mixed, with cheers from some sections but a more prominent chorus of boos from others.
This reception stood in sharp contrast to Trump’s appearance at the College Football National Championship. At that event, held at Hard Rock Stadium, Trump was also shown on the Jumbotron during the national anthem. Surrounded by his grandchildren, he waved to the audience, which responded with an overwhelming and enthusiastic wave of cheers.
The difference in crowd sentiment highlights a divergence in how fans in New York City and Florida reacted to the former president’s presence at major sporting events.
Trump’s visit to New York for the NBA Finals also necessitated a significant security presence. Reports indicated that a security fence was erected around Madison Square Garden, with the Secret Service and numerous law enforcement officers on duty. This heightened security led to longer lines and increased wait times for attendees entering the arena.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) also implemented traffic closures in the vicinity of the Garden. Streets between West 30th and West 35th Streets, from Sixth Avenue to Eighth Avenue, were closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic starting at 4 p.m.
Furthermore, watch parties planned in the area were canceled. NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that these cancellations were due to security concerns related to Trump’s visit. She explained that for Game 3, with a presidential visit, the NYPD could not support external watch parties, though they hoped to reinstate them for Game 4.
Tisch acknowledged that New Yorkers are accustomed to presidential visits often involving area lockdowns, which she anticipated for the evening’s event at the Garden.
However, Madison Square Garden management offered a different perspective, suggesting that the permit for watch parties was denied by local city officials rather than being a direct consequence of Trump’s presence.
This NBA Finals appearance is one of several sporting events Trump has attended since his presidency. His past appearances include the Super Bowl two seasons ago, the Daytona 500, and the Ryder Cup, events where he has often been a visible figure.
