SouthernWorldwide.com – A significant piece of Universal Orlando’s theme park history is making way for the future, as demolition has commenced on the beloved Lost Continent land at Islands of Adventure.
This iconic themed area, which debuted over 25 years ago, is undergoing a phased closure. Footage captured by a local news helicopter revealed an excavator positioned amidst rubble, signaling the start of the demolition work within the aging land.
The closure will also impact the popular Mythos Restaurant, which is slated to close its doors in 2027. This announcement comes as part of Universal’s strategic plan for the area.
The Lost Continent first opened its gates in 1999, alongside Islands of Adventure itself, helping to shape the park’s initial identity. Its design was deeply inspired by mythology, featuring imposing stone facades and intricate storytelling drawn from ancient legends.
For many years, it stood as one of the resort’s most atmospheric destinations. Universal Orlando highlighted how the land masterfully blended fantasy adventure with cutting-edge special effects and captivating live entertainment.
This immersive environment was also home to several attractions that became fan favorites over the years.
Among the most iconic thrill rides at the resort were the Dueling Dragons roller coasters. These were later re-themed as Dragon Challenge following the introduction of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
These coasters were renowned for their intricately intertwined tracks, synchronized launches, and thrilling near-miss elements, as documented on Universal Orlando and Wizarding World history pages.
Another signature attraction that drew significant crowds was Poseidon’s Fury. This experience captivated guests with its dramatic water tunnel effects, fiery bursts, and engaging live actors.
However, over the past 15 years, Universal has gradually phased out elements of The Lost Continent.
In 2010, the Dueling Dragons coasters were re-imagined as Dragon Challenge, a move that coincided with the expansion of the neighboring Wizarding World of Harry Potter, according to Universal Orlando.
This attraction eventually ceased operations in 2017. Its closure paved the way for Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, which has since become one of the resort’s most sought-after rides.
The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad, a dynamic stunt show, bid farewell to guests in 2018. This marked another significant change within the land.
Poseidon’s Fury followed suit, closing in 2023, as noted on Universal Orlando’s retired attractions page. This continued the trend of evolving the park’s offerings.
Mythos Restaurant is expected to continue welcoming guests until 2027, as part of the ongoing phased closure plan, according to a press release from the company.
Separately, Universal announced that the Horror Make-Up Show at Universal Studios Florida is temporarily closed. This closure is in preparation for what the company describes as a “reimagined experience.”
The updated show aims to feature a blend of classic and contemporary horror properties, promising “shockingly fun surprises” for attendees.
Hogwarts Castle at Islands of Adventure has also undergone continuous maintenance and refurbishment work in recent years, as reported by Orlando Informer.
Looking ahead, Universal Orlando is set to introduce Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift in 2027. This new high-speed roller coaster will be based on the popular blockbuster movie franchise, as indicated in the press release.
The demolition of The Lost Continent has elicited a range of reactions from Universal visitors.
