The unique immersive experience, which aimed to transport guests directly into the Star Wars universe, will cease operations on September 30.
Disney announced the impending closure on its official website, confirming that the final guest stay will be on the aforementioned date. The company has advised all guests with reservations for stays after September 30 to contact Disney directly to make arrangements for modifying their bookings.
In a statement, Disney expressed pride in the team that brought the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser to life. They emphasized their commitment to providing an excellent experience for guests during the remaining operational months. The company also extended its gratitude to guests and fans for making the experience memorable.
To manage the influx of reservation modifications, Disney has temporarily paused the hotel’s reservation portal. This measure will remain in effect until May 26, allowing the company to focus on assisting affected customers. The exact reasons for the closure and the total investment made in the 100-room facility in Bay Lake, Florida, have not been disclosed by Disney.
The Halcyon, as the hotel is known, launched with a premium price tag in March 2022. A two-night stay for a couple was priced at $4,800, while a package for two adults and one child cost $5,299. For three adults and one child, the price was $5,999. At the time of its opening, Disney highlighted that guests would enjoy a two-day immersive journey featuring luxurious accommodations, exquisite dining, and unparalleled entertainment.
The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser offered guests a highly interactive experience. Upon arrival, visitors were transported to their rooms via a “Launch Pod,” immersing them immediately into the Star Wars narrative. Throughout their stay, guests could engage with characters, crew members, and fellow passengers, becoming integral parts of a two-day unfolding storyline.
Activities within the hotel included lightsaber training sessions and instruction on operating the ship’s navigation systems. Guests also had opportunities to interact with iconic Star Wars characters such as Chewbacca and Kylo Ren, further enhancing the immersive nature of the experience.
The closure of the Halcyon comes at a time when Disney is undertaking significant cost-cutting measures. CEO Bob Iger has initiated a plan to reduce expenses by over $5 billion as part of a broader company “transformation.” This initiative includes a substantial reduction of 7,000 jobs, which is being implemented in three phases, with the final wave of layoffs expected at the beginning of the summer.
These pending layoffs are impacting various sectors of Disney’s operations, affecting a wide range of employees from entry-level animators and artists to senior management. The scope of these job cuts underscores the company’s strategic shift and focus on financial efficiency.
In a related development, Disney has also decided to withdraw from a substantial $1 billion investment in a new office space in Lake Nona, near Orlando, Florida. This project was intended to house approximately 2,000 employees. The entertainment giant cited “changing business conditions” as the reason for this decision, which follows a protracted dispute with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
