SouthernWorldwide.com – The United States men’s national soccer team has advanced to the Round of 16 in the World Cup, securing a 2-0 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday night in Santa Clara, California.
This marks only the second time in the team’s history that they have won a knockout stage match. Their previous success in this phase was in 2002 when they defeated Mexico 2-0 in the Round of 16.
The USMNT is now set to return to Seattle to face Belgium. Belgium managed to come back from a 2-0 deficit against Senegal in the second half, ultimately winning in extra time to reach the Round of 16.
Typically, when the USMNT reaches the World Cup knockout stage, they are viewed as underdogs, aiming for an upset through gritty performances. However, in this expanded tournament format, which now begins with a Round of 32, the team playing on home soil was considered the overwhelming favorite.
Their performance demonstrated why they were favored, even when facing challenges in the second half.
The match began somewhat inauspiciously for the USMNT, with Bosnia and Herzegovina earning a couple of corner kicks. Goalkeeper Matt Freese, who had not been significantly tested in this World Cup, had to make a scramble save on one corner that was heading towards the back of the net.
However, the USMNT quickly got into their rhythm in the first half and took control of the game. It appeared to be a matter of time before they would score. Folarin Balogun, who has had an outstanding tournament in terms of scoring, lived up to his role as a striker when he capitalized on a turnover, received a pass, and found the back of the net in the 29th minute.
Unfortunately, the sideline referee raised his flag for offside. Video replays confirmed that Balogun was indeed offside, and there was little argument from head coach Mauricio Pochettino or his staff on this occasion.
Balogun had another opportunity in stoppage time and, this time, he was onside and proved to be lethal. With Bosnia and Herzegovina defenders closely marking him, Balogun turned and struck the ball with his left foot just inside the opponent’s box. The shot slipped through the goalkeeper’s legs, marking the first goal of the match.
The predominantly U.S. crowd erupted in celebration, and Balogun commemorated his third World Cup goal with a gesture reminiscent of LeBron James’ signature move, as his teammates congratulated him.
However, a significant moment occurred in the second half that favored Bosnia and Herzegovina. Balogun was shown a red card following a VAR review that determined he had stepped on a defender’s ankle. This was a controversial decision that fundamentally altered the game’s dynamic, leaving the USMNT with 10 men against Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 11.
Furthermore, despite the hard-fought victory, Balogun will be suspended for the Round of 16 match due to this decision, which represents a significant loss for the U.S. team.
The red card was issued in the 64th minute, and the USMNT had to endure, as FOX Sports color commentator Stu Holden aptly described during the broadcast, to secure the win with a one-goal lead. Despite the numerical disadvantage and the need for increased defensive tenacity, the USMNT still managed to create scoring chances.
One such chance resulted in a goal that was disallowed when Christian Pulisic found the back of the net, but he was ruled offside. However, in the 80th minute, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Stjepan Radelijic was penalized for holding SergiƱo Dest just outside the box, resulting in a yellow card and a prime free-kick opportunity for the USMNT to extend their lead.
Malik Tillman, the German-born son of a U.S. military veteran, stepped up and delivered a perfect free-kick. The ball dipped over the five-man wall and went past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.
This goal put the U.S. up 2-0, effectively nullifying any momentum Bosnia and Herzegovina had gained following Balogun’s red card. Despite desperate attempts to get back into the game, the U.S. defense held firm, much to the satisfaction of the sold-out crowd at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium and the millions watching at home.
There will undoubtedly be extensive discussion regarding how the U.S. will cope with the absence of Balogun in the next round. However, the primary objective of securing the win in this match was achieved, keeping the home-country favorites’ title aspirations alive.
