SouthernWorldwide.com – The United States Postal Service (USPS) has issued a stern warning to the public regarding the significant number of dog attacks on mail carriers, urging pet owners to take immediate action to secure their animals.
Last year alone, over 5,200 postal workers fell victim to canine attacks. This alarming statistic has prompted the USPS to launch its annual Dog Bite Awareness campaign throughout June, an initiative focused on reducing these incidents and promoting responsible pet ownership.
Leeann Theriault, employee safety and health awareness manager for USPS, emphasized the daily challenges faced by postal employees. She stated that their work environment is dynamic and constantly changing, necessitating a shared and continuous vigilance from everyone to prevent dog-related incidents.
Even pets that are usually docile and well-behaved can exhibit unpredictable behavior, especially when they feel threatened or are protecting their territory, the USPS noted.
To mitigate these risks, the agency is strongly advising pet owners to ensure their dogs are securely confined before any mail delivery occurs.
Furthermore, owners are encouraged to keep their animals leashed during delivery hours. It is also recommended to avoid direct interaction with mail carriers while pets are present in the vicinity.
Postal officials also highlighted the considerable financial repercussions that can arise from dog attacks. These include substantial medical expenses, lost wages for the injured carrier, costs associated with replacing damaged property, and other associated damages.
The USPS shared the harrowing experience of Fiona Hudson, a letter carrier in San Antonio, to illustrate the dangers postal workers can encounter. Hudson recounted an incident where a dog leaped over a fence and attacked her.
She was subsequently rushed to the hospital, suffering from a broken bone, a severe arm sprain, and significant bleeding, which left her with limited mobility.
Hudson shared that while her physical injuries have healed, the psychological trauma from the aggressive attack remains with her.
She urged customers to accept their responsibility in ensuring their pets are safely secured during mail delivery times.
The USPS also pointed out that failure to secure pets can directly impact mail delivery services.
When a mail carrier feels unsafe due to a loose or aggressive dog, mail service to that address may be temporarily suspended, the USPS stated.
In such situations, residents might be required to collect their mail from a local post office until the safety concerns are resolved.
If the issue with a dangerous dog persists, homeowners could be mandated to rent a post office box to continue receiving their mail.
The USPS further elaborated on its website that if a dog is observed roaming freely in a neighborhood, neighbors of the pet owner might also be asked to pick up their mail at the local post office.
According to USPS data, the city of Los Angeles reported the highest number of dog attacks on mail carriers last year, with a total of 70 incidents.
Dallas followed with 50 reported incidents, while Denver recorded 45, Houston had 44, and Chicago saw 43 attacks.
“The Postal Service places the safety of its employees as a top priority,” the USPS concluded in its statement.
