SouthernWorldwide.com – Former First Lady Jill Biden recently shared her anxieties regarding former President Joe Biden’s health, specifically his performance during a 2024 debate where she feared he might have been experiencing a stroke.
During the debate, the then-president appeared to struggle, marked by prolonged silences, apparent confusion, and hesitant speech. In a candid interview with CBS, Jill Biden described her reaction as “frightened.”
“I don’t know what happened,” she stated. “I mean, when I watched it, I thought, ‘Oh my God, he’s having a stroke,’ and it scared me to death.”
A stroke, as defined by the Mayo Clinic, occurs when there is bleeding within the brain or when the flow of blood to the brain is interrupted.

Recognizing a stroke can be challenging due to the variability of its symptoms. The American Stroke Association (ASA) outlines key warning signs using the mnemonic “B.E. F.A.S.T.”
The doctor further highlighted other symptoms to be aware of, such as sudden weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, difficulty in processing information, and confusion. The ASA also cautions that severe headaches can be an indicator of a stroke.
It is crucial to avoid administering aspirin to a person suspected of having a stroke, as it could potentially exacerbate bleeding in the brain if that is the cause. However, for an ischemic stroke, this type of medication might be beneficial.
According to the ASA, approximately 1.9 million brain cells perish every minute a stroke goes untreated. This underscores the critical importance of prompt treatment for higher survival rates and a reduced risk of disability.
“In medicine, we use the term ‘time is brain,’” the doctor explained. “This means that the faster you bring the patient to the emergency room, the faster they can receive emergency treatment if indicated to reopen the blocked artery in the brain, if there is one.”
Upon arrival at the emergency room, which should ideally be within the first few hours of symptom onset, brain imaging can be performed to assess the situation, according to the doctor.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises against individuals experiencing stroke symptoms driving themselves to the hospital. Instead, they should seek a ride or call emergency services (911), as crucial treatment can commence even during transport in an ambulance.
The American Heart Association reports that an estimated 80% of strokes are preventable. Preventive measures include effectively managing risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, and other known contributing conditions.
Data from the CDC indicates that one in four stroke survivors will experience another stroke within the subsequent five years. Therefore, individuals at higher risk are strongly encouraged to develop a comprehensive plan for both stroke prevention and treatment.
