SouthernWorldwide.com – Republican Steve Hilton has secured a spot in the November general election for California governor, positioning himself to potentially succeed the term-limited Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom in leading the nation’s most populous state, which also boasts the world’s fourth-largest economy.
California operates under a “jungle primary” system. In this unique electoral setup, all candidates, irrespective of their political party, are listed on a single ballot. The top two vote-getters then advance to the general election.
The crucial question now is who Hilton will face in the November contest. His primary rivals leading up to election day were Xavier Becerra, a former California Attorney General who later served as a Cabinet Secretary in President Biden’s administration, and Tom Steyer, a billionaire hedge fund founder turned environmental activist.
Becerra would make history as the first Latino governor of California in modern times if elected. Steyer, who previously sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, has invested over $200 million of his personal funds into his gubernatorial campaign.
The ballot featured a substantial field of 61 candidates. Among them were Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, and several Democratic hopefuls including former Representative Katie Porter, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.
Hilton is aiming to become the first California Republican governor since Arnold Schwarzenegger’s re-election in 2006, which was two decades ago.
Both Kamala Harris, the former Vice President, and Senator Alex Padilla had considered running for governor as Democrats. However, both announced last year that they would not pursue the office. This led to an unusual situation where California lacked a clear frontrunner for the gubernatorial race for the first time in over twenty-five years.
MISCONDUCT ALLEGATIONS DOG SWALWELL AS DEM RIVALS SEIZE OPENING IN CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR’S RACE
The race for governor was largely overshadowed for much of the previous year. Significant events like the devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles area and President Donald Trump’s immigration raids captured national attention in California.
However, the gubernatorial contest gained prominence earlier this year. This shift occurred after one of the leading Democratic candidates, Representative Eric Swalwell, withdrew from the race. He subsequently resigned from Congress following a political scandal related to multiple allegations of sexual assault and misconduct, which he continues to deny.
Swalwell’s departure from the gubernatorial race created an opening that allowed first Steyer and then Becerra to gain traction in the polls.
Steyer, who had an unsuccessful bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, heavily utilized his personal wealth. He spent over $200 million to saturate media channels and the internet with his campaign advertisements. In addition to Steyer’s personal investment, more than $80 million in outside funding has also been channeled into the race.
Sheriff Chad Bianco, a Republican, launched his gubernatorial campaign in April of the previous year. He was considered among the top contenders until early April when President Trump’s endorsement of Hilton seemingly diminished his momentum.
