SouthernWorldwide.com – The Artemis II crew recently surprised a 5-year-old aspiring astronaut named Jack with a special gift during a town hall event.

Jack, who hails from Atlanta, had previously expressed his deep fascination with space to CBS News. He even donned his own commander-ranked spacesuit during the Artemis crew’s launch from Florida last month.

This passion earned him the affectionate nickname “Commander Jack” from CBS News’ Rob Marciano. Jack, sporting his white spacesuit, was a special guest at a town hall event with the Artemis crew.

During the event, mission specialist Christina Koch presented Jack with a remarkable surprise: an orange spacesuit identical to those worn by the astronauts during their mission.

“It says commander just like yours, so you can still keep your title,” Koch told Jack, acknowledging his existing rank.

The newly gifted spacesuit was not only a perfect replica but also signed by all the crew members. However, it was another detail on the suit that particularly caught Jack’s attention and brought him immense joy.

Artemis II mission specialist Christina Koch presents 5-year-old Jack with a spacesuit during a CBS News town hall on May 1, 2026.

“It says NASA!” Jack exclaimed with excitement, clearly thrilled by the prominent branding on his new gear.

Koch then extended an invitation to Jack, saying, “We would like to have you on our team. What do you think?”

Jack’s enthusiastic response was a thumbs-up, followed by a heartwarming hug for his parents. He then turned to Koch to express his gratitude with a hug as well, a testament to his pure joy and appreciation.

Jack’s mother shared her profound appreciation for the astronauts’ impact on her son. “Jack has been hugely inspired by this mission and by all of you,” she told the crew.

She further emphasized the significance of their work, stating, “So thank you so much for everything you’re doing, obviously not just for Jack, but for all of humanity.” This sentiment highlights the broader inspiration the Artemis mission provides.

The event underscored the powerful connection between space exploration and inspiring the next generation of scientists and adventurers. Commander Jack’s reaction perfectly captured the wonder and excitement that missions like Artemis aim to ignite.
