Biden’s Environmental Rule Under Fire for Impacting Truckers and Americans

SouthernWorldwide.com – The Trump administration is moving to significantly revise environmental regulations enacted during the Biden administration, specifically targeting emissions standards for heavy-duty trucks. This proposed rollback is projected to inject approximately $12 billion into the trucking industry and aims to alleviate some of the supply chain cost pressures that contribute to higher prices for everyday goods for American consumers.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has put forth modifications to existing heavy-duty truck emissions rules. These changes are expected to result in substantial savings for truckers, potentially up to $6,000 per new truck. The ultimate goal is to reduce transportation expenses, which in turn should lead to more affordable prices for American families.

Under the new proposal, certain restrictions related to Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) systems, such as engine deratements and speed limitations for new highway engines and vehicles, would be eliminated. This also extends to new nonroad engines and equipment, including agricultural machinery. Instead of these immediate operational limitations, operators would receive warning alerts, allowing them to continue working until repairs can be safely scheduled and completed.

Furthermore, the proposal seeks to reduce the stringent and costly emissions warranty requirements that were part of the 2023 regulations. While these adjustments are being made, the plan intends to maintain nearly 90% of the originally planned reductions in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The modifications also aim to provide manufacturers with extended timelines and greater flexibility in meeting the updated emissions standards.

According to Szabo, a key issue addressed by this proposal is the significant problem caused by failures within DEF systems. These system failures can force trucks and farm equipment into a severely restricted “limp mode,” reducing their speed to as low as five miles per hour, thereby impacting operational efficiency.

Szabo elaborated that with over 200 potential failure codes associated with DEF systems, these deratements can leave truckers stranded on the roadside. For farmers, such disruptions can lead to the loss of valuable working hours, or even entire days, during critical periods like harvesting seasons.

Szabo stated that the proposed changes would simultaneously enhance product reliability and lessen the negative impact of DEF-related issues. He further explained that by reducing the cost of new trucks, the overall cost of the supply chain would also be lowered.

Rollins commented on the broader economic implications, noting that rural communities depend heavily on diesel-powered engines for essential services. These engines are crucial for delivering food, powering homes with electricity, and transporting families. The billions of dollars in projected savings are expected to directly benefit those who are fundamental to the nation’s sustenance, energy, and clothing needs.

This latest proposal is in line with former President Trump’s stated intention to reverse environmental regulations implemented during the Biden administration should he return to office.

“We will terminate the Green New Deal, revoke the electric vehicle mandate, and unleash American energy,” Trump declared during his inaugural speech, signaling a clear departure from the environmental policies of his predecessor.

Szabo suggested that the Biden administration’s approach involved pushing Americans towards electric trucks through its enforced regulations.

“That’s what the Biden administration was doing. They were forcing people to not have choice anymore, taking away their freedom to choose what kind of vehicle and telling them you have to buy an electric vehicle,” he added, implying a lack of consumer choice in the previous administration’s strategy.
