SouthernWorldwide.com – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers recently intercepted a significant drug shipment valued at $10 million, concealed within a commercial truck carrying cabbage. The discovery was made on Monday at the Pharr Port of Entry, a key border crossing located in the southernmost region of Texas.

The operation involved a canine unit and non-intrusive imaging technology, which alerted officers to a hidden compartment within the trailer. A subsequent physical inspection revealed 477 packages containing 1,173 pounds of cocaine. The estimated street value of this seizure amounts to a staggering $10,787,500.

Following the discovery, CBP officers confiscated both the narcotics and the commercial truck used in the smuggling attempt.

This latest bust highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the U.S. in combating drug smuggling, even with substantial investments in border security and record staffing levels at CBP.

Congress has allocated considerable financial resources to the agency. Previous funding measures, including President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” and more recent efforts to support the Department of Homeland Security, have provided significant financial backing. These bills collectively allocated $64 billion and $26 billion to CBP, with a substantial portion of the latter earmarked for increasing agency manpower.

Earlier this year, CBP reported achieving a historic milestone in staffing, with over 21,471 officers on duty. This represents the highest number of officers in the agency’s 102-year history.

Concurrently, border crossings have seen a dramatic decline since the end of 2024. Encounters dropped from over 144,000 in December 2024 to just 13,500 in May, marking a 90% reduction.

Despite these increased investments and reduced crossings, CBP and other federal agencies continue to intercept sophisticated smuggling operations. These operations pose a persistent threat, aiming to introduce illegal drugs, weapons, and individuals into the country.

In a separate incident in April, CBP officers uncovered a significant cocaine stash valued at $3.7 million. This shipment was cleverly disguised within a delivery of cucumbers.

Another notable seizure occurred in April when CBP officers prevented the illegal crossing of a vehicle carrying a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, 16 AK rifles, 24 rifle magazines, 16 rifle stocks, 20 pistol grips, and other weapon components. This incident underscored the diverse and dangerous nature of contraband attempting to enter the country.

A CBP spokesperson, Rodriguez, emphasized the continuous nature of the threat posed by illicit narcotics. He stated, “The threat of illicit narcotics is constant, but so is our vigilance.”
