SouthernWorldwide.com – The FBI has successfully recovered a centuries-old Christian artifact, a reliquary urn, which had been stolen from Italy and unexpectedly resurfaced in New England.
The recovery was announced by the FBI on April 30, although the urn was actually obtained by agents on February 11.
This 17th-century urn was identified as one of 17 ecclesiastical artifacts pilfered from the Church of San Michele Arcangelo di Cangiano. These thefts are reported to have occurred between 2012 and 2022, according to a statement from the FBI’s Boston office.
The gilded artifact boasts an ornate Baroque design and was historically used to house Catholic relics.
Investigators were able to trace the approximately 400-year-old artifact to an antiques dealer based in New England. This dealer had reportedly acquired the urn from another dealer in Italy.
While the exact method and perpetrator of the theft from the church remain unknown, it is confirmed that the urn was sold to the New England antiques dealer and subsequently shipped to the United States.
The FBI collaborated with Italian authorities to pinpoint the New England antiques dealer. Agents subsequently conducted an interview with the dealer.
During this interview, the urn was examined, and valuable information was gathered regarding how the antiques dealer came into possession of it. This examination and interview led to the definitive conclusion that the urn was indeed the one missing from the Church of San Michele Arcangelo.
The antiques dealer, upon receiving this information, ultimately agreed to voluntarily surrender the urn to the FBI for its repatriation to Italy.
Throughout this entire process, the FBI maintained close cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Culture.
A formal repatriation ceremony for the urn took place in Italy on April 29.
The Baroque urn is described as a significant piece of Italian history. Its protection is mandated by the Italian State under accords in force with the Vatican City State.
Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Boston Division, Ted E. Docks, expressed his enthusiasm for the recovery, calling it “incredibly exciting.”
Docks further elaborated that this reliquary urn serves as a tangible link to profound religious devotion and connects to the generations who once lived and prayed with it.
