SouthernWorldwide.com – Four Senate Republicans have once again joined with Democrats to block an attempt to pass former President Donald Trump’s key legislation on voter identification and election integrity. This move occurred as the Republican party is focused on securing funding for immigration enforcement.
Similar to the previous attempt, Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and Thom Tillis of North Carolina voted with all Democrats to defeat the proposal.
This marks the second time Republicans have tried to attach the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act to their budget reconciliation package. Both attempts have failed to pass the legislation, even after a significant floor debate on the bill.
The effort to attach the bill was part of a budget reconciliation package nearing $70 billion, which is intended to fund agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol. Senator Lindsey Graham’s amendment, therefore, required at least 60 votes to be approved.
However, this threshold proved to be too high once again on Thursday night. The outcome further highlights the political reality in the Senate: the SAVE America Act faces a slim chance of passage due to unanimous opposition from Democrats and a lack of full support within the Republican party, despite efforts like the talking filibuster initiated by Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
Despite the setback, Graham urged Democrats to vote against the amendment, suggesting their opposition to voter ID laws indicates a willingness to permit election “cheating.”
“There’s no other reason to say you don’t have to have an ID. It just makes cheating easier,” Graham stated. He questioned the motives of those who oppose voter ID, especially if they are against non-citizens voting in elections.
Graham also commented on the issue of transgender athletes, stating, “And biological males playing girls sports [is] not good for anybody, and a minor should not be allowed to transition their sex. That’s the biggest change you can make in your entire life. You shouldn’t be allowed to do that as a minor. This is what we say. What do you say?”
In response, Senator Alex Padilla of California pointed out that a similar proposal was defeated with bipartisan support just over a month prior. He asserted that current safeguards are effective and that it is already illegal for non-citizens to vote in the United States.
Padilla argued that the amendment mirrored previous efforts to advance the former president’s agenda, aiming to control elections and ban mail-in voting. He also expressed his offense at what he described as attacks on transgender individuals during Pride Month.
