SouthernWorldwide.com – The immense pressure and fervent anticipation surrounding the NBA Finals are palpable throughout the basketball world, whether players openly acknowledge it or not.

However, New York Knicks star center Karl-Anthony Towns revealed that he experienced a profound sense of “calm and peace” despite the high stakes in Game 1 on Wednesday night at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio against the Spurs.

The source of his serenity amidst the intensity? His mother.

Towns’ mother, Jacqueline Cruz-Towns, tragically passed away in April 2020 due to complications from COVID-19. Yet, even though she was not physically present in the stands for her son’s inaugural NBA Finals game, Towns expressed that he felt her presence throughout the entire day.

“I don’t know what it was, but I just felt a calm and a peace that, I don’t know, had to be coming from the woman above,” Towns shared with the “Inside The NBA” crew on ESPN following the Knicks’ 105-95 victory over the Spurs, securing Game 1 on the road.

“So, I felt really confident today. I felt good. I felt like a kid. It was just fun out here.

This is something that, as a kid, you always dream about. You always hope to be an NBA player, let alone be in the NBA Finals.

All day, it was just a weird feeling. It felt like I was a kid getting ready to go play my Saturday AAU games and Sunday AAU games.

In a way, I felt like I was seeing her in the stands, and it was really fun. It was really comforting.”

Towns acknowledged that the feeling was unusual, especially since he had been informed about the intense pressure and the critical need for execution that characterizes the NBA Finals.

However, his ability to play freely and without any self-doubt proved instrumental, particularly when the Knicks found themselves trailing.

While Jalen Brunson’s clutch mid-range jumper late in the fourth quarter virtually sealed the victory for the Knicks, it was Towns who ignited the comeback in the third quarter.

He was instrumental in erasing a 14-point deficit, providing the Knicks with the opportunity to mount yet another dramatic comeback in the NBA Playoffs.

Towns was actively creating second-chance opportunities for the Knicks with offensive rebounds, while simultaneously delivering stellar defense on Spurs star Victor Wembanyama.

These efforts were crucial in shifting the momentum back towards his team’s bench.

At one point, Towns was visibly exhausted, panting heavily after expending tremendous energy throughout the quarter.

Towns concluded the game with an impressive stat line of 18 points and 12 rebounds, marking another double-double in the playoffs.

He also contributed four assists and one block, shooting an efficient 7-of-15 from the field.

Post-game, he even admitted that he didn’t believe he, nor the Knicks as a collective, had played a particularly strong offensive game.

However, it was the team’s resolute defense that propelled them to rally and secure the necessary baskets on the offensive end to close out the game with a 10-point victory.

This win marked the Knicks’ 12th consecutive victory, underscoring the truly remarkable nature of their playoff run on their journey to the NBA Finals.

They will be aiming for their lucky number 13 on Friday night in Game 2 against the Spurs before returning to Madison Square Garden next week.
